What's the best lens to use at a running event? I was advised previously to use my 55-200mm, but having seen one of Dom Bower's Youtube links, he mainly used a wide angle lens. I could use an 18-55mm I guess, but only having the one body I don't want to be messing around changing lenses.

It's a free shoot I'm doing in the hope of improving my skills, so I'm not being paid for it, I just want to try to get the best shots possible on the day.

What sort of running event.. 10k, marathon, track, indoors ,outdoors.

also depends on your style of photogrpahy.. do you like tight cropped pics of runners or bigger wider pictures of the whole area?

My choice would be a 70-200 to cover most of the above :)

I'm personally more of a fan of the cropped pics, it's a 5k event so other than the faster runners, most will be finishing in bunches.

200mm prime for me when shooting 10k, half marathons, etc. One local guy prefers wide angle on the f8 and be there principle but I prefer the background separation I get from 200mm at f/2.8

It depends what style of shot you're after, you could get good shots with your telephoto, or go from the skateboarder-style close in with a wide-angle lens type thing, it's your call!

Thanks all, I guess I could do half and half then and see how they come out and which I prefer.

I still haven't developed a 'style' yet, I'm too busy buying glass and not actually using my camera!
