hi everybody,
has any of you thought it a good idea to get any formal qualifications, attended any courses with a view to taking better photos ? I have spoken to some very accomplished photographers for and against it, and which one is any good, there are hundreds and they are not cheap.
Advice would be greatly appreciated.

I kinda like the idea of a course to improve, but I don't like the class room bit, I think i'd rather stick to trial and error.

Good on ya' for wanting to learn/improve

Depends on what you need/want to improve on. I did a general photography portfolio building course a few years ago which was OK but looking back, it was a lot of cash for what was learned. If you only do landscapes, there's no point doing a studio portraiture course etc.

Thinking of doing the OU course - T189. Saving up tescos vouchers to pay for it :)

There's a few of undoing the OCA degree course through distance learning. There's a thread on here about it.

If you do go for it, it's worth remembering that while you are on the course you are officially a 'student' and so can purchase things like Lightroom or CS5 at student licence rates - the licence continues after you stop being a student, the only downside is that you are not eligible for upgrade prices from a student licence.

Haven't read through the topic, but, if you're looking to further the hobby into a career, employers do look for some sort of a qualification in photography.

If however you only want to do it to improve your skills, I suggest you look for clubs first.
To join your local camer club would be much cheaper, probably more convenient, people are usually friendly and you can go on outings to put into practice what you've learnt.

You can also talk to each other and get advice from everyone etc.

Fine if you are a "club" person, or can find the right sort of club. Otherwise it can be just a waste of time and money.

No nawty talk please.
