photography style ?

Hi
I recently got quite fascinated with the work of photographer Mat Blac k, and i was wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of film he uses to get that grain/noise in his photographs.
(I am new in the film photography, so excuse me if my question sounds stupid)

but your links are even grainier and with more contrast so I'd hazard a guess they are lith prints and scans of the paper print.

it looks to me like it is a medium speed film ~ ISO 400 which was underexposed (shot at iso 1600 or 3200) and then overdeveloped as that gives high contrast and high amounts of grain

It's HP5 at 400

Are you sure it's film? If so then as previous poster said it's push processed.
If digi then easy to do in PS.
The quality of light also has a lot to do with the contrast. We don't get that quality of light here in the UK.
