Photography "workshop". Not what I expected.

I was recently gifted a voucher for a day out at an owl sanctuary to shoot owls, eagles, falcons and hawks with an experienced photographer.

I expected to be quizzed on my previous experience, workflow etc so he could work out our experience before we actually went out and took photos. Nothing happened we just went out and took photos. There was hardly any direction or instruction.

There were a few of us and from chatting to everyone the range of experience/ability was quite significant. A few tips were given but you really had to ask to get an answer, and if you didn't know what was wrong with your photo you couldn't ask in the first place! There was no viewing of the photos for comment after the shoot. We just left.

I'm in two minds whether to write a polite letter/email to the company as I think there is so much more to give. I really don't think I gained anything skills wise other than just the opportunity to take close up portrait shots of the birds.

If I'd paid for it myself I'd be quite miffed!

I think a polite letter to the company might be in order....there are a lot of very talented photographers who don't make good teachers and he's probably one of them.

Certainly won't do their reputation any good in the long run!

I'd contrast that with our recent visit to the WHF (TP trip). Our guide was also a keen photographer and was suggesting shots, worked hard to get the animals into good shooting positions and was always keen to see our shots and make suggestions.
