Have you tried any of the tutorials on the web (via youtube for example)?

Agree completely! Find out what you want to do and then youtube for the tutorials, its brilliant! I have just started using edit masking and doing PS makeup :)

Plenty of books out there too with tutorials and projects :)

I've just signed up to a 10 week course at my local college, 2 hours every Tuesday night and only cost £75 (plus you get a student card so I'm sure I'll be able to get my £75 back in student discounts at shops/restaurants etc.......)

books:
'photoshop cs4 for dummies'
'brilliant cs4 guide'
'photoshop cs4 bible'

youtube videos
have a look at gavin hoey

also go on the websites from the magazines like
photoanswers.com
dslruser.com

buy magazines with monthly photoshop features.

This is something I really need to spend some time learning as it’s one area where I let myself down because I only know how to do basic stuff on Photoshop.

I think I’m going to invest in a book and also do some You Tube searching. When I enquired about courses most people seemed to think you could learn most of the stuff you needed to know from the internet anyway. I’m going to have a go at doing it that way and if it works I can put the money I will have saved towards a new lens :D

OK, all valid points, but courses are much more than just the learning the subject. There's the whole interaction with the other students and you usually compare shots etc (which for me is great as I tuck those ideas away for later ;) )

thank you all for your great comments i will give youtube a go but i do like the idea of having somebody to go to and have the feedback and gain ideas from other students.

thanks for the book names i will go borrow some from the library!

On the flipside a course may not go into as much detail on a particular area as some would like - this is where online demonstrations and magazine/book tutorials add real value.
