This time next year I plan to be going full frame in the shape of a 5D mkii (Second hand obviously). It's a Camera I've lusted after for a few years now and I plan to posses one. I'm aware I'd need to move lenses from Ef-s to Ef, However my budget would be Around £1200-1400.

My main focus is on landscape and portraits, So my lens choice is looking to be a Canon 50mm f1.4 for a standard lens and a Canon 17-40 f4L. Another choice would be the 24-70 f2.8, But I'm not sure if it would be wide enough. Though it would mean I wouldn't be missing a focal length out from 24-200mm as I have a 70-200 f4.

What I guess im asking for really, is lens suggestions that would fit in my budget. Say £700 for lenses, ignore filters etc at the moment. What do you have for full frame, and why did you opt for that?

I have a Canon 5D along with a 40D (with some Ef-S lenses)

Main lens for the 5D was Canon 24-105, as it came with it (kit lens) however it has failed and will be replaced.
I shoot a bit of everything (but never in a studio) and 24mm was wide enough most times when shooting landscapes as a hobbyst.
I also own a 70-200 F4 L and a Canon 100-400 as well as 4 fast (~F2) primes 35, 50, 85 & 135mm for event coverage in low light.

I have a friend who has the 24-70 F2.8 and loves it.

Like you I had wanted a 5d mk2 for a while before I got one. My main lens is a 24-70L and it's plenty wide enough most of the time but I also have a 17-40L that I got years back for my old 300d when I was in New York on holiday.

I got the 24-70 as I wanted a good, reasonably fast zoom, that would be my standard lens and that's just how it's worked out. I also use a Tamron 70-300 VC but usually keep this on the 7D for the extra length the crop body gives. Other than that it's a nifty fifty and a macro lens.

I have the 5D2 & 5D3 along with the 50 1.4, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and the 17-40 f4

The 17-40 very rarely goes on - I just use it for the occasional landscape and distorted close ups. Don't get me wrong, it's a great lens, but for day to day I find the 24-70 covers just about all I need

When I go full frame (100% for landscapes) I'll have to ask myself similar questions. The question is how many super wide angle shots do you usually take? For myself on my crop body nearly all my landscape shots are at a focal length of between 10mm and 24mm. So a 24-105 would not be wide enough for my needs but a 17-40 would fit the bill perfectly, or a 16-35 if the budget allowed.

I do landscape and find the (Nikon) 24-70 wide enough. I do have the 16-35 for low perspectives but really the 24-70 does about 80% of my landscapes. For Canon shooters moving to FF the 24-105 is also a great start. A friend of mine has the 5D2 and AFAIK the only lens he uses is the 24-105...

The 17-40 is an OK lens but given the choice the 24-105 would be my starting point.

Like an idiot I was forgetting that 24mm on a crop is equivalent to about 17mm full-frame, so a 24-105mm would be wide enough for perhaps half of my landscape images but I would still need a 17-40mm too.

To John, the OP, what sort of focal lengths do you most commonly use for your landscape work?

I have recently added a 6D to go with my 7D. If your budget allows I would personally look at the 6D not the 5D mkII.

As far as lenses are concerned I have the 17-40, 24-105 and 70-200. The 17-40 is a great lens but IMO is a little to short to be a good walk about lens. It works great as a landscape lens on the FF and believe me there is a lot of difference between 17mm and 24mm for landscape work. The 24-105 is I believe a very good walk around lens. It might not be quite as good as the 24-70 (I don't know as I have never tried a 24-70) but it is a LOT cheaper and excellent value.

If landscape photography is very important to you try and compare the field of vision between the 17-40 and the 24-105 before you make your choice. If UWA is not the be all and end all I support Digifrog and I would start with the 24-105.

Wrong way round. ;) 24mm on a crop equates to 36mm on FF. 16mm/17mm on a crop equates to 24mm on FF.

edit: I generally find 24mm wide enough on FF.

For landscapes it really depends though id say most my photos are taken at 18-24 on crop. But I have used a 10-22 and did love the wide angle it gave (was a few years back). I'm personally swaying towards a 24-70 for the aperture rather than a 24-105 (despite the fact it has IS, though I could look at the 24-70 f4) I have alot of choice tbh.
I haven't looked at the 6D in detail but there is a few functions like gps that could be handy.
