Playing around with stacked 2x tc's

The birds were thin on the ground so I had a play with stacked 2x tc's.
I would estimate all three shots were from around 1/2 mile - the man on bridge shot is a very heavy crop.
7D + 300/2.8 + 2x tc + 2x tc =1200mm (1920mm FOV) - tripod and remote release.
I though the results were reasonable given the stack.

If you live in Park avenue then you are right Bob . These were taken from the Tarka trail at Anchor wood bank.

nearly Roy ;) Oakland park south near enough ;)

Yep, that's not far off Bob - if you take a straight line from Oakland park south to the Tarka trail that's about where I was shooting from, would you say the boat and Rugby club is around 1/2 mile from there?

pretty close i would say may be just a tad under and quite impressice considering the stack

Hi Roy

The images look mighty impressive considering.

Could you let us know which TCs these were ?

I assume one was non-reporting, at least, and did you retain AF or were these MFed ?

Thanks for putting up the images.

Gary, the tc's were a Canon 2x MkII and a 20 year old Teleplus 2x. With this stack you lose 4 stops so strictly manual focus on the 7D
Even if you stack Canon converters the Camera only sees one of them (the one nearest to the lens) I often stack a Canon 1.4 and Canon 2x and still get AF on the 7D.

Roy, thanks for the info above.

TCs are IMHO weird things.

A few years ago I purchased a Jessops x2TC for 35GBP and it is the best few quid I have EVER spent.

I now have a load of TCs (some of which I will be selling in the near future but that is another story). Anyway, the Jessops x2 (Kenko MC4) is optically stunning and importantly it reatains AF on every single AF point when put between my 600f4IS and a 60D. Other TCs work only on the outer points, some other combinations do not seem to work at all well. Friends think I'm nuts putting such a cheap bit of glass on a 600.

Your images (not just these but posted elsewhere) have pretty much convinced me that when the 600 gets too heavy then I will get a 300f2.8 as a wildlife lens - Canon should pay you comission you are a great advert for the 300 !

Thanks again.

Gary, the 300/2.8 + 2x tc is certainly no match for the 500/4 or 600/4 but it is a heck of a lot lighter which is the sole reason why I went for it. I tend to think of it as a relatively lightweight 600/5.6.

Re the Converters, I have tried several Kenko tc's including the Kenko Pro which is very good but I think that the Canon converters just have the edge.
The 20 year old Teleplus 2x (now Kenko) that I used with this stack is optically very good but it will not AF with any of my lenses - I think it probably needed re-chipping.

Hi Roy

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of a 600f5.6 walkabout with IS !

This gives a very useable FL on the 1.6 crop bodies, maybe not so, IMHO, on the 1.3 crop 1D ? I suppose you could stack converters (as you have reported elsewhere) on the 1 series but you are losing the lightweight aspect then.

I think along these lines a lot BTW, then use the 600 and it gives fantastic images so then decide to live with the weight.

Decisions...Decisions...

BTW, my current lightweight walkabout kit is a 60D plus kenko pro 300 X2 on a 70-200 f2.8IS II. Although you are never going to shoot really flitty little birds at a distance with this set-up it is suprisingly good for waterfowl and the territorial critters and who are happy for you to get quite close to.

Regards

Gary
