Have just had a birthday and have received (amongst other things) some cash and a Jessops gift voucher.

I would like to purchase a 77mm Circular Polarising Filter to go with my Canon L Glass. I would like to buy something of reasonable quality, preferably without going overboard, and am wondering what make I should go for and what sort of price would get me a decent quality filter. Many thanks in advance of some useful info.

Cheap filters on a high quality lens makes no sense.

Hoya Pro polariser - about £75 - perhaps more.

Buy good, and you buy once; buy mediocre, and you'll buy twice.

Hoya Pro, B+W, Heliopan, or Marumi; are all reasonable.

I agree with Wail B+W for me every time
Dave

Good plan  Hoya HD or Hoya Pro-1. Jessops prolly not cheapest though.

If you buy an expensive multi coated one you run the risk of scratching the coating. You should really take it off and replace it in its case after every time you use it.

If you buy a cheaper one this will not be necessary....you can leave it on the lens to protect its outer element. And you really will not notice the difference!

Thank you all for your replies but Oh My! aint it all so confusing. I have been trawling the net and I have come up with a B+W MRC Polariser at Jigsaw for £110.44, a B+W Kasemann MRC at £149 at Warehouse Express, a Marumi DHG77CIR for £44.96 at Microglobe (was £55.13) and then a Marumi DHG Super at Kodak Express for £153.16, is this a superior filter to the DHG77CIR?,
I though that I might spend about £100 but even then its not easy to choose which direction to send my pennies!

Hi Steve, Thanks for this, must admit, I explored Amazon but must have missed this! I have now been back and have ordered it so hopefully it will be with me within a few days, as soon as it arrives I will be off out to give it a go. Many thanks for your help and thanks too to all who have responded.
Kind regards to all. Thank you

Must admit I would buy a cheaper filter if it's just for protecting the front element (I use them as a lens cap)
But a polarising filter needs to be a good one.

 Your welcome - I've missed things in the past when looking for stuff - seems that I can find deals for others but not myself :bang:

My B + W 77mm MRC Circular Polarising Filter turned up today, just handling it you get the impression of QUALITY, it's really well made. All that remains now is to get out and give it a go. Thanks again to everyone for their input.

Did you get the one from amazon

Yes I did Steve, thank you so much for the info. Regards, Geoff

Thats no probs Geoff - just that I have it saved myself for when I decide that I want one - so will await some images taken with it ;)

Just to warn you off, I bought a Jessops branded Linear Polariser, really not impressed with the photo quality.
Not saying don't buy a known brand from Jessops, just that I am not happy with this particular Jessops brand product (was 72mm).
