1280x800 here, and current picture dimension rules are more than adequate

Nah, horizontal IMO, that way you only need to scroll down a page not across.

My lowest is 800x480 however I chose the 800x600 as the horizontal resolution is the same. That's on my phone, on a PC lowest is 1280x800

Screen resolution is only partly relevant, size of the browser window is more relevant. This screen is 1680x1050 , my browser window is about 1000x900 and the vertical browsing area maybe 700px high once the borders, menu, tab bar, address bar and noscript alert telling me this site uses javascript are taken into account.

I browse the forum on my phone (800x480), never bother looking at the photos though.

No most people have a screen wider than 800 so no scrolling is required, change it to 1024 and those with a 1024 screen will need to scroll slightly but those with a 800 height will see a real change in scrolling taking away the boarder caused by the browser and tools bars so height is the problem for me

I guess it depends on the minimum resolution, with a normal computer then yeah I guess vertical resolution is important (why 1920x1200 is much better than 1928x1080, which a lot of new monitors are using). With something smaller the horizontal width is important and why I would never buy an older Android system or iPhone for web browsing.

are all talking moble phone resolution? I doubt there is anyone on a lappy at 800 or lower?
