Yes
where do you guys get your portfolios done?

and

how many photos do you put in?

thanks for any help and pointers>>>>>>

:wave::wave:

lol, ditto was just about to ask the same question... would just add what format to present in?
:)

And...

If you get prints what size do you reckon is best?

I've been using A3 ish but I'm seriously thinking of going bigger. Whatchareckon?

I had one done at photobox, wasnt too bad. Maybe Blurb too would have a good deal.

Not sure what sizes they do but A3 should be enough.

Oh and I had 24 ish pages

Is it acceptable to just take mounted work in a folder? This isn't for an interview, just a portfolio review at my local gallery. They won't judge me, will they?

I'm not even sure it needs to be mounted, although that will depend on what the requirements are I suppose. My portfolio isn't mounted. It's jsut prints and a few 5x4 trannies (they were the days)i n an A3 display folder.

Ah okay, thanks. I think I'll be fine. They're A3+ size and then with 4 inches of mounting on each side... Is that too big? I'm going to get worried now! :p

I bought an A4 artists portfolio from Hobbycraft. With the proper inserts (I bought 20 of them so it holds up to 40 photographs), it's a great way to present photos.

I know I'm a bit late to this thread but I'm going to hobbycraft tonight to buy the same thing wanting to do an A-level photography course in sept and want a portfolio to take along to the interview.

How much are the 20 holders to put in marc?

EDIT: maybe not tonight as they are closed :bonk:

Thats not a bad price in hobbycraft then.
Cheers.

Just need to get out and take some photo's worth putting in it.
I've got 6 months so should'nt be too hard. :woot:

Those look really neat....they've something similar in Paperchase, albeit at around 3x the price, literally  I might get one myself actually!

Yes i saw that but with 20 pages you can display up to 40 pics and it will force you to keep updating so it always looks fresh.
[cause im quite lazy lol]

Hi,
it depends on what you intend to show in your portfolio and for who...

if you apply for a job with a music magazine for example its good to show about 15-20 images on 1 or 2 subjects no more ie portraits, events
you don't want to confuse whoever is going to look at your portfolio and make sure that you images are in order and not in different places

 I wouldn't have any more than 25 photos in my portfolio. The photos should be the absolute best of the best, so it shouldn't take many to win over potential clients. Putting too many in can be seen as being either indecisive, or lacking confidence in a set of shots!

You just have to look at LRPS awards etc....you can only enter 10 shots for things like that.

So when you take them out of the box are they all seperate?

ie so you can spread them on the table.

There's an article in Pro Photographer Feb issue all about portfolios. Some of the stuff those guys are talking about is probably more than many people need but it's interesting to read if you're going into it seriously.

The thing with portfolios is that they need to display your best work and do it professionally. Don't cut corners to save a few quid if you're after getting work form it - you have a lot of competition and you need to stand out.

It depends what you shoot. I have my portfolio done in the same wedding albums as we supply, and we used the same process to produce them. We have about 20 sides in each album, we have a few from siungle weddings (exactly what the bride and groom chose) and we have an example album which covers the bases (i.e. a few B&W, a few matt, a few satin, a few glossy, a few stylised shots etc.)

RICHARD-; I looked at your website but its not a wedding one which I expected??

The wedding albums I supply are the ones with the paper separating the pages, so for my portfolio I think that these pages would get battered too quickly.

How many pics are in your whole portfolio that you show a client.

If i was to use 40 pics would it be better to show a whole wedding or bits and pieces of several weddings.

At present i show 6 complete weddings and some couples look at every picture and some just glace at a couple.

I really want to cut it down to make it nice and simple but am unsure **** way to go.

Any help or pointers greatly received.:D

Would you recommend separate smaller portfolios for areas of work (portraiture, events, music, etc) comprised of your best shots in that area, or one big portfolio with a small selection for each speciality when going down the printed route?
