What would peoples ideal settings be when shooting portraiture in a studio enviroment with a black BG.

In terms of Av or TV mode, or even M?

I am new to studio work and am basically after a starting point to work from here.

Thanks in advance.

Well, in a studio with controlled lighting I guess most people would use manual, keeping a lowish f number. Failing that Av would be better than Tv.

I suggest M if using flash, setting camera to appropriate snyc speed then approximating aperture based on flash guide number and checking histogram on LCD for exposure then
adjusting aperture, iso, or flash output to get correct exposure.

With contiuous lighting try Av at large aperture focus /reframe on nearest eye, Spot or centre area metering off your sitters skin with exposure compensation for very light and very dark skins.

Good luck, John

I would always shoot studio portraits in Manual, start on f8, 125 and iso100

Hope this is of some help

Think it would be best to use a flash meter and use M on the camera

What he said. Use this as your starting point and adjust the light output to get a correct exposure.

That's a good starting point. I usually start on f/5.6 if it's a single person portrait
