What service do you use if you sell a lens and wish to post it, Royal mail?
Do you use a basic service or is there one that's tracked or comes with insurance?
Apologies for sounding thick but I haven't actually had to post a parcel for years.

I always send mine by Royal Mail Special Delivery (RMSD). It's pricey, but gets there next day (unless you post on a Friday), and it is insured too. You can find the prices on the Royal Mail website. Hope that helps!
 
RMSD for items above a certain value, RM Recorded (i.e. signed-for) for items below it. Special Delivery can be pretty expensive for a larger lens due to the weight of the glass. Recorded isn't so bad, I sent one of the lenses I was selling via Recorded and it still arrived the next day.
 
Recorded Delivery items travel through the normal mail network, the only difference is that they need to be signed for on delivery. Compensation in the event of loss or damage is limited to 100 times the value of a first class stamp, currently 46p, so compensation is a maximum of £46. Over that value it would be better to use Special Delivery which, while more expensive, travels through a separate network. Compensation is normally up to £500 but can be increased to up to £2500 on payment of an additional charge.
 
Just came across this thread so maybe a bit late now but was reading this thread at the weekend which I thought was a really good source of info and might be useful.
