Hi all,

As some of you know I have spent the last few weeks looking for a new laptop.
I have decided to go with Asus N53SN - the best spec I could find on the net for £835.

For the last few weeks this model was out of stock in all internet shops in UK and I am still waiting for this to be delivered.
I have called AsusLaptop.com and they said that these laptops are now in UK, will be dispatched to all resellers and I should get mine this week.

So nearly bought one, but went for an similarly priced (well £90 more, but that inc. delivery, andt same spec apart from no BluRay and lower GFX neither of which are an issue for me) XPS 15 due to the better screen, better Wifi (upgraded to a dual band n) and backlit keyboard (upgraded again). Would have been cheaper if I'd stuck with base wifi, keyboard and upgraded the 6G RAM to 8 myself...

Wouldn't have bothered until I found a 10% discount coupon that brought it down to a reasonable jump over the above (and even less when you factored in delivery and CC charges). Just got to wait for it to be built now!
 
UPDATE: Another delay in delivery! The earliest delivery time from Asus is "2-4 weeks".
I have cancelled my order and will be looking for an alternative, but I don't think I will find anything that powerful for the same money. Time will tell. I will probably end up buying it in 4 weeks time :)

Dell XPS 15. Better full HD screen and same price/cheaper.

and choose the first one (£699). Change the processor and screen and add to cart. Then apply the 10% discount code from: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/t...ST&cid=41141&lid=1069630&acd=1240410277620565

(or just use: C?JWK979HT463C) and you get 10% off the final price. The difference is no BluRay, 6G memory instead of 8, but that's a £40 upgrade if you do it yourself (although I just went the expensive route and got Dell to put 8 in). Also, gfx card is only a GT525, but as I would rather be without a gfx card, that's fine by me. You can upgrade to a 2G GT540 if you want for £65. The screen is supposed to be quite a bit better judging by reviews and I also spec'd a dual band wireless/bluetooth module as well as the backlit keyboard.

The only thing is delivery times are quite long (quoted as 14th July for me).

The offer is only on until tomorrow when Dell will do a reworking that will give you a slightly different spec for a slightly different price!
 
I'm sticking to ASUS. If I would like to buy a laptop with the same spec anywhere else, I would have to pay at least £200 extra. I'm editing my photos on external LaCie 324 so I'm not too worried about the LCD, which is not bad at all. After checking 30 + websites and on-line shops, I have re-ordered N53SN and I will be waiting for the delivery mid July.
 
Well, I've had my £930 Dell (which has a good few extra features over the Asus) for over 2.5 weeks now. Hows the N53SN stock situation?
 
It was delivered to me one week ago. I haven't spent too much time with it yet, but it looks and feels great. Will post more details during weekend

What can I say...

I'm very happy with it!

It's x times faster than my old Asus F3 (Core2Duo 1.7GHz, 2GBRam, GForce 7600 256MB VRAM). It runs CS5 and LR3 without any problems.
The most noticeable difference is when I'm using Nik Software plugins. I can switch between pre-sets every second and it will show me fully rendered full screen preview. HUGE difference.


Processor is rarely reaching 50%
8GB of RAM is more than enough for my post processing needs.
Battery lasts LONG thanks to Processor and Optimus technology (use on-board graphics for basic tasks).
The screen is good, much better than in F3, but still - there is a hell of a difference between my laptops screen and external LaCie 324. I'm spoilt...
NVIdia Card, when running, performs great.
Sound is awesome: the loudest and "surround like" sound I've ever heard from laptop.
The quality of materials used is very good. nothing special. It does the job.

Now the bad bits:

I would prefer HDMI to be at the back of machine
2 USB 3.0 would be much appreciated

...and that would be it.

I don't mind slight keyboard flex that people are reporting. Makes no difference to me.

I've bought it for it's parameters (processor, RAM, graphics) and I'm not disappointed. It's a monster :)

I can give it 9/10

That's what I'd say about the Dell I bought. Great machine, fast enough to play with images :)

BTW, the Dell has 2 x USB3 ports and a back HDMI port ;)
 
BTW Andy - when I check the Dell specs it says your XPS15 only has a 1366x768 screen??

Aah I see you DID get an upgrade?

I have a sl creaky old XPS M1710 with a fab 1920x1200 screen & no where on the Dell website can I find any 1920x1200 options any more

:shrug:

Would love an i7 with USB3

That's because a 1920x1200 is 16:10 ratio. All modern lappys are 16:9 to fit with 16:9 TV content (if you do the maths, you'll find all dimensions are in the ratio 16:9). Economies of scale and all that...
