Precut mounts with a difference:

I have always been told that when mounting a photograph the top/left/right sides should always be the same size but the bottom should be deeper, to show which way round the photo should be. I don't have a mount cutter at the moment but would like to but some percut mounts with this in mind. I have bought a few before but they were equal all the way around.

I know the answer will be buy a mount cutter, and I will perhaps get one for my birthday in a couple of months. But this is an interim solution

Having a wider bottom border is purely a personal choice thing these days. The wider bottom border idea is based on old picture framing practices when people hung pictures high up on picture rails. The perspective introduced by looking up at pictures makes the bottom border look narrower than it really is .... so a wider bottom border was cut in order to reduce this.

Cutting up mounts as Steve suggests is fine and dandy provided you have a frame to take them once cut. A mount cutter will enable you to cut mounts as you want them as you say but be aware that you will also need to consider the size of the frames you are going to fit them into. It is always a compromise unless you are also going to make your own frames .... which is what got me into picture framing. (Another of my big interests which can consume enormous amounts of spare cash!).

I have a maped mount cutter which is slightly cheaper than the logan equivalents. i think it's the 80cm one which retails at around £90

If you want to PM me with an offer I would consider selling as I rarely cut my own these days. Comes with all the parts and two packs of unopened blades (45 deg and 90deg)

Thats not something that I have ever looked at, but measuring a couple of pictures on the wall they do have deeper bottom mounts - amazing how something can be so obvious once you know to look for it!!
