Predetermined Settings

How many of you out there have a pre-made settings card which you take out with you on shoots & what sort of info does it contain? I appreciate that the more experienced amongst you may have a lot of this info in your heads & automatically know what to set your camera to for any given situation.

I'm just after making up some sort of waterproofed 'go-to' card that will fit in my bag/pocket with ISO/shutter speeds/aperture settings for landscapes, misty days, seascapes, low light scenarios, portraits etc etc.

Makes sense to me to have something like this on my person instead of having to 'guesstimate' every time.

This will probably work best for indoor shots if you take shots in the same venue. Outdoors its never the same, I would usually take a test shot and scribble the base settings on my hand.

I can understand crib sheets for different subjects in terms of AF & drive settings etc, even some for flash, but for exposure???

I'd have thought it would have been better to fire off a shot in auto mode, check the histogram then recreate the settings in Manual/Tv/Av and tweak from there?

To an extent you already have these cards stored on the the camera. They're called scene modes ;)

Every shot I take is different. Before I take a photo I think about what I want to achieve from the picture, and then apply the relevant settings. Ok easier said than done for a beginner, but that's all part of the learning process. To be honest if you just plug in the numbers from a pre written card then you won't really be doing anything different to just twisting the dial to landscape, macro etc.

It would be far better IMO to learn the effect of aperture, shutter and ISO and then guesstimate, as you say, the exposure. You'll get hits and misses, but you'll begin to understand why you're getting hits and why you're getting misses. In time it'll pay off and make you a better photographer.

I have a basic motorsport setup on one of the custom function settings on mine,

AI servo
High speed shooting
ISO 100 for nice days
Shutter priority
etc etc.
