Yes
I've got a job interview tomorrow and have been asked to create a 3 minute presentation on a "hobby" of mine. Well, I consider photography a hobby of mine and think it would be a good subject to base my presentation on.

I'm posting for some ideas! What I've decided to do is shoot 1 image (or use somebody else' image with permission) shot with a certain camera setting, than the same shot but with different camera settings. It's hard to explain what I'm talking about, but I basically want to explain the difference and compare both images. I'll then show some PP of retouching or something simple like that, as the brief did say "nothing too technical".

Does anyone have any ideas? (or even understand what I'm talking about, lol)

Thanks.

I get what you mean, I think its a good idea and probably similar to what I'd do if I had to do the same.

You should however definitely use one of your images because if you don't then basically you're saying "This is what I like to do, but I don't believe I'm any good at it".

I like the idea of just talking about 1 setting and 2 images though, should be interesting.

I was thinking about going out in a couple of hours with my tripod and shooting two images, both without flash, one with regular "auto" settings and one with a slow shutter speed and wide aperture. Think that would make for a decent comparison or has anyone got a better idea?

Great idea, but bear in mind not everyone will be fascinated by the fact you are a photographer. I spose the advice would be keep it simple and make sure it has impact.

They want to see how you put an idea across. Any idea.

How about a depth of field demonstration?

Two portrait style pictures, one with everything in focus, the other with a nice soft background. You never know, one of the interviewers may be itching to learn how to get those nice portraits :)

What's the job for? out of interest, it might provide some incite in to the type of presentation that would be suitable :)

Technician for virgin media - nothing fancy

I wouldn't even know how to do that (or know if it's even possible with my standard d3100 18-55mm kit lens)!

Very good idea. Only problem is I'll be presenting to potentially hundreds of people, and have been specifically asked to do a powerpoint presentation, so not sure if bringing a physical camera is what they want.

Why photographs are an important part of social life, documenting life to the grave, life and death (war, famine, floods) news, sport, celebs, fashion, food, products, how many of them have NOT seen a photograph? Imagine if you did the presentation without the powerpoint, would you be able to covey the importance of photography WITHOUT the photographs to emphasise their need....

If you want to buy me a drink, send me a teabag in the post ;)

I'm sure what they are trying to see is whether you can speak about something (anything) in a clear and concise way. I think it sounds good but be careful to keep it relatively simple - you dont want to baffle anyone with jargon or technical details.

+1 this is they type if thing they will go for I think, wouldn't talk about technical aspects at all. Show landmark photographs and peoples personal memories that are interesting, maybe one personal shot and make that one something like an important event in your life, doesn't have to be technically good or taken by you, a Polaroid if you as a child would be fine.

Good luck.
