Pretty poor service

I recently purchased a lens from a 2nd hand dealer that is held in high regards. The lens was listed in mint condition. What I received was nowhere near mint. I phoned them and they asked for photos which I sent. They acknowledged that it shouldn't have been listed as mint and offered an 8% discount or to return.

I opted to return, and was ensured that the return postage would be refunded. The refund has subsequently gone through, but they didn't refund the postage as promised and no mention of it in their email either.

Although I like this vendor, have used them in the past and have even been known to recommend them I am seriously reconsidering them for future purchases. I won't mention their name, but there won't be many on here that haven't heard of them. Hopefully this is a single event and that they get their act together. I certainly won't be using them again until I hear some fresh positive reviews about them.

I am usually quite tolerant of mistakes like this, but with 2 so far, if they don't refund the postage promptly then 3 strikes and they are out...permanently.

It would make your post more helpful to others if you named said company.

Have you chased them for the postage refund? if not do so and dependent on their response name and shame. They have refunded without argument so acting well so far, but you should give them the opportunity to sort it before complaining here I feel.

Your post is totally pointless without naming them, most used dealers view this site and seeing their name attached to a complaint like this will do much more to make them change their procedures than a single complaint from you.

That is my intention, I am not overly ****ed off with them, just tired of them falling into the same trap as the majority of retailers/service providers these days...waiting to see if I will ask for my refund but secretly hoping that I will go away.

Maybe it is a genuine error on their side, but I hate having to chase things up all the time.

If anybody really wants to know who it is, look in the top right hand corner of this page, they are a very prominent on this site.

Once bought a Nikon 70-200mm from MPB which was described as excellent, when i got it i had several chips out of the body close to the Mount and the VR was knackered, it had obviously been dropped, however Matt was excellent in offering a repair or full refund, i opted for the refund and it was very quick.

The VR could have got broken in transit but the chips were obviously missed in checks

Ive since bought from Matt without any issues and would do again no problem.

They dealt with a return for me last week, and did it more efficiently than any other return process I've used, was perfectly happy with the way the handled that aspect.

However the initial description of the condition of the item wasn't as expected - hence the return. In my humble opinion, they might consider higher-res pictures & a painfully honest description for higher value items at least. I don't mind a dink or scratch here or there, as long as I know what I'm getting & pay an appropriate price. Maybe I'm just picky & they only see a small percentage of items returned so it might not be a concern.

Yes, provided what you post is factually correct then what is the problem with posting.

I cut my fingernails last week... its factualy correct.. but the information is just as useless as this thread without the companies name.. as for looking in the top corner for who it is.. its a blank...no advert there...

however now we know who he means so it makes more sense :)

One small query...

If you actually are talking about MPB, how come you are waiting for a postage refund? They usually arrange for the courier themselves and prepay the collection fee.

I've also had a mixed experience of MPB. I bought a tamron 17-50 off them a little while back described as excellent condition. On arrival I inspected it and found the front element was actually wobbling and loose. It was extremely well packaged in the original fitted box inside another box filled with packing foam and I find it very hard to believe it sustained that damage in transit as the outer box was absolutely spotless. So I rung them up, the guy on the phone insisted it must have been damaged in transit but didn't hesitate to offer a full refund. They weren't particularly good at communicating, once I posted it off I never heard back anything, I only knew they'd actually refunded it when I got my next bank statement.
So while I'm left unimpressed by their communication, they do seem to have a very good policy on refunds, I'd email or ring them up and ask.

They arranged to pick my gear up and delivered what I got off them when we did a deal some time ago.

Also, I found them very good to deal with, the lens I got was as described, probably better in fairness.

The complete opposite for me then. I bought a used 450D and 18-55 kit lens from them. They said the 450D has slight damage (scratches, scuffs etc) it came back absolutely mint, could have even passed it off as nearly new! Needless to say, I didn't send it back! :p

Seems to me that they look like a decent company who at least address any issues. Could be much worse.

Hmm.. what are the odds that somewhere, someone is disappointed that the 'mint' 450D they received is actually scratched and scuffed... perhaps given the numerous copies of stock they have that the wrong one could get sent to the buyer on occasion.
