Printing from digital and cropping

Hi all

Having some photos from our cameras printed online, however I seem to be running in to what must be a common problem. Heads and part of photos cropped off.

Also I used an online shop at Christmas for some prints, and depending on the camera make, we got different sized prints. Is this normal, or is it down to the fact I selected zoom to fit, to avoid the cropping issues.

Any help here would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks

When you send images away to be printed you need to size them correctly for the prints you are ordering. If you send a 10 x 8 sized file and select 7 x 5 prints the machine will print a piece of the image to 7x5 hence you are losing bits of your pics.

Decide what size you want them and batch resize before sending.

Ok, thanks bouncy.

So my D80 will size at one size, my wifes Nikon point and shoot at another size, and so on....... therefore all my problems are solved with a resize to 6X4 in photoshop and bing bang bosh.......problem solved.

Most point and shoot have an aspect ratio of 4:3 (i.e. the long side is 1.3333 times longer than the short side). This fits print sizes like 8x6.

Most DSLR have an aspect ratio of 3:2 (i.e. the long side is 1.5 times longer than the short side). This fits prints like 9x6 and 6x4.

The safest way is (like Alison says) to always crop your images on the computer to fit the shape of paper being used. Then you can be sure of what you get. If you choose zoom to fill then it will arbitrarily take an equal amount off top and bottom (or left and right).

yea and agreed
crop to parameters in photoshop...
i shoot 3:2 and 4:3
first one for 6x4 prints
second one for forums...but would need selective cropping as you are doing

You can't change the aspect ratio of the camera - it's determined by the physical dimensions of the sensor - sorry :shake:

yep afraid so its just an aspect ratio, i had the same trouble printing 8x6 inch prints. for me to get the proper photo ive got to mess about ordering 9x6 prints which only a certain amount of places do it.

This is why dye sub printers ( like the mentioned DNP DS40) are popular with photographers. Most dyes subs of this type ( with the exception of Sony and Kodak), will do a top size of 6x9". You don't lose anything.

Kodak and Sony only go up to 6x8".

This is why when you go to use a photo kiosk in the High steet and the kiosk uses a Kodak or Sony dye sub as it's print engine you will lose something.
