Printing.....getting a colour cast (Noob stuff, I know!)

Marcel, I have exactly the same problem with the R2400 and some decent but not branded paper. The only options are find a profile that prints it correctly OR modify the image so that your modifications cancel out the problems caused by the lack of an accurate profile.

Both these options are not easy but you could try doing a test print using different profiles.

I use photoshop then in the print section you can set the paper size etc then move your picture around on the page.

So cut out a section of the picture that shows the problem maybe 1/16 of the paper size then go into print and move the picture so that it prints in the top left.

NOW make adjustments THEN return to the previous line and print it next to the first and repeat......

You should end up with 1 sheet of paper with 16 different prints on it using 16 different options/profiles.

This should only use up 1 piece of paper and the ink for one picture :)

I AM BUYING A PRINTER CALIBRATER !!!!!! as I am sick of this happening. Once I have one I will be able to do a profile for people so long as they send me the test prints plus a stamped addressed envelope to return it and a small donation to TP.

Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about:

calshot.PNG

You must untick the "Center image" option and if you are really serious about it then you can set the exact size using the TOP and LEFT options.

So set the image size to 4cm by 4cm then print the first at 0,0 then 4,0 then 8,0 then 12,0 then 0,4 then 4,4 then 8,4 etc etc

Set "Color Handling" to PHOTOSHOP MANAGES COLORS then change the PRINTER PROFILE....

On this example the first print is set to "Working RGB - sRGB IEC61...."

Oh b****r biscuits, I plum forgot.

I suppose I could say I'm still in the viewing area of the swimming baths, it's been 24 hours and the vending machine is empty....and I'm cold :p

Here's a jpeg of the image in question, gone through my normal workflow. Raw(adobe) > LR (Adobe) > CS(Adobe) > Processed > Flattened, converted to srgb, then resized, bordered, sharpened and tagged.

I'll try and tinker in photoshop to get a *similar* cast to what I'm seeing in print, and upload it.

Slightly more extreme (only slightly) to what I see in print.

I opened the levels and tried increasing the red channel and while it did increase the red, it didnt look the same.
I tried the green channel instead, and decreased the green and bingo, thats what I see....

It's a lack of green....

you'll be significantly cheaper buying different paper.

ilford, harman, permajet, olmec, calumets own brilliant (gloss/luster type) papers all have their own ICC profiles.

Before you print it Marcel have you tried to white balance the image at all? The original JPEG looks to have a slight colour cast on it to start with which sure ain't going to help the print along.

Have you got a RAW version?

Yup, it's processed and balanced (as well as can be anyway), from the RAW through Lightroom through to Photoshop

The problem is, this room has a very bad colour shift issue, with mixed light sources and mixed temperatures, along with some colourful surfaces for bouncing and tinting the light. (Notice why alot of my 365's in here were in B&W? :p)

Unfortunately, that's not the issue here though :(, it's the inconsistency between the screen and print. Lack of green methinks.

Thanks anyway :)

Marcel
I just printed your piccie - must say it looks ok, if anything a touch green even!!!

I used these settings on CS4:

colour profile: sRGB everywhere
Colour handling: Printer manages colour
Rendering intent: Perceptual

Printer: Photo Paper Pro
Print Quality: High

It's a Canon Pixma iP5300
with Canon Photo Paper Pro PR-101 High Gloss

If you want to drop me your snail-mail - I'll stick it in the post

I note one problem that often happens when selecting no printer management one thing get over looked and that is you have another box to tick see screen shots of my settings
Note bespoke paper profile for permajet oyster paper you need to have your paper set here

Oooh Mike, sorry, I missed your post! PMing you now.

Chaz, thanks for that, but I'm on a Mac, so the settings are different (to a fashion) :$
However, I doubled checked the Mac equivalent settings and they are the same.

Well I ended up getting the prints done from Photobox and they came out alright. (Dont remember any complaints)

However I'm trying to print out some shots tonight for my son for school, and Im getting the same chuffing problems.
Trying all sorts of settings

The best settings I can get are either the following combination

===========
Photoshop settings
No Colour Management
Relative Colourmetric

Printer Settings
Photo Paper Plus Glossy

========

OR

=======
Photoshop settings
Photoshop manages colours
Printer profile : Canon IJ Printer Profile 2005
Relative Colourmetric
-----
Printer settings
Paper : Other Photo paper
Quality : Medium

===========

Still looks overly red (like the previous photos), and quite darkish

Those two above sets of settings are the closest I can get to what Im seeing on screen, and even theyre still overly warm and dark.

Im thinking the only way to sort it out is to get this paper with my printer profiled...Is that possible?
I've forgotten much of what was discussed earlier this year :$ Like I say, I very rarely print stuff out tbh......

the printing is the criteria...i have just spent ages trying to get my mickey mouse epson printer with a triple colour cartridge and one black on premium paper to come alive...

its the damndest thing doing it at home

the ones i take to costco always come out just as they looked on the screen

good luck with new material...

PS. Just an FYI, this is the shot Im printing :D

Well this gets curioser and curioser. Just dragged another jpeg into iphoto and printed from there, mostly auto stuff.

Spot on printout.

Well I've got some paper that Jimmy Lemon uses (bought a box off him), of A4 Glossy (Niceday branded). He uses it to print out all his shots from his Epson R220 and I must say they come out bob on. (Think his workflow is uncalibrated too, the git).

Anyway, I printed a black and white shot out and it looked alright to me, but someone else said it had a red/pink tint.

Is there anywhere that does printer profiling? Ive got a box of 100 of these buggers so I might aswell get it set up properly.

Bump?
Pah, rubbish forum this, I want my money back :D

i used pureprofiles a while back, you download a file and print it, post the print away and theyemail you back with a profile to suit the paper and ink you've used.

That's the sort of thing. Would you recommend them?

Deffo m8, they sorted out the Epson's screaming greens when I was using a PC, never had it done under mac ownership as i've never had anything good enough to print :(

clicky

I've used pure profiles as well - exceptionally helpful chap but unfortunately you can't have a phone conversation with him. He only operates by email. (afaik)

I did get some good prints eventually but since then they've gone off again.

Having decided it wasn't worth using Epson inks, I got some jet-tec and the problems are even worse!

It's hair-tearingly frustrating....

hi marcel in your first post you say you let both printer and photoshop manage colours this could be your problem try either turning off colour managment in printer or photoshop and see if it improves also why not try printing straight from lightroomagain either let lightroom or printer manage colours not both

Nope, I've tried it with all options greylensman (Not together of course)
