Are there privacy settings here on talk?

It appears that sometimes when you put stuff on forums and you use a certain keyword relating to yourself it puts it in a google search!? Which I dont want.

everythingyou put is searchable. everything you write is archived on the internet.. every picture you uplaod is stored elsewhere..

there isnt really any privacy on the internet... thank goodness :)

Once you post it can be retrieved by a Google search. I have seen items of mine in several forums appear top of the list in Google.
Just make sure you don't post anything that makes you personally identifiable it it troubles you.

and remember everything you do write can be quoted out of context and used elsewhere without you even knowing... how good is that :)

Google "geminip talkphotography".................... there you are - right up at the top for the whole world to see.

I currently only use three forums - one business, one I run and this one - this is the only one that appears in searches

Any website owner including forum owners can use a "bobot text" to stop search engines from blah blah ... not the best idea if you want to appear in google etc and have a decent placing..

However.. stopping a search engine from indexing your website isnt the same as privacy and wont stop your words from being archived or copied. Also its a decision to be made before the website goes public really.. too late for TP :)

I can't help but wonder why you would put anything on the internet (or a forum) and not want people to see it. Isn't that the whole idea of the internet?

Steve.

Pprune (Professional pilots rumour network) comes up a lot too.
All the journos poke about in there after an accident looking for info.

Probably ARRSE (Army forum) appears also.

ARRSE comes quite high in Google...but it's a cracking site :p Just like TP.

Near enough anything to do with photography, you can bet TP will be in the top 10 results.

Yes, it is. I hope Brown & Co. look at to see what they think of them - just in case they cannot guess.

Ok guys i get the message! Silly question. I was having a bad day

Not really. If I am talking on a specific forum, I don't necessarily consider what I say to be public. hence anonymity. It's not like facebook etc

L

Does anybody remember watching the AOL good/bad internet TV adverts? I think they were some of the best adverts of recent years, and really highlighted internet security issues amongst others!

its completely public. there is nothing stopping joe blogs coming in and search for something then using a quote of text you have written.

yes, I understand that and it doesn't bother me as i am anonymous

L

yeah, yeah someone wants to know who I am, they can find me. But it takes more effort than if I had my website plastered over every post

L

Why do you need anonimity?

All this talk of people quoting a poster - i don't geddit? Why would anyone want to? What do they stand to gain? Do you say things under your anonymous existance here that you wouldn't choose to say to someone's face? Do you lie? Are you hiding something?

Odd.

(NB not aimed at anyone btw, just a general 'you' as in the people on here that seem worried about people finding out who they are)

Sure, I wouldn't go posting my date of birth and mother's maiden name, but I see no good reason why anyone would feel the need to 'hide' completely.

OK, it's not really to do with hiding. Not for me personally. I'm not going to lie or make things up. However I am in business and going on to a forum called Talk Business. It's possible I will talk about things I wouldn't discuss generally, with a customer/the general public - how we decide on pricing etc. It's possible I will have a view that goes against the majority. So I am here as an individual, not a business.
This is not uncommon on forums. Actually I find this one odd in that respect.

my grandparents unplug their router when theyre not using the internet because they think hackers stole their credit card details through it. and no amount of telling them its not that will convince them otherwise, but hey ive only been in IT for 12 years.. lol

at the end of the day youre more likely to get targeted by people rummaging through your bins or cloaning your card at an ATM..

Email. Letter. Phone. Any other form but a internet forum. Anything else I find highly unprofessional.

Fair enough, however I take the stance that I simply wouldn't make comments on a public forum that I wouldn't want a customer to see. I can read all about other people's pricing discussions, and I may chip in, but I wouldn't be anything innappropriate for a potential customer to hear.

and that's entirely fair enough. I felt that if I wanted to participate fully in business orientated discussions, I would be better served not stating my business.
That said, at that point I didn't know the nature of the forum. It seems unlikely that there would be a discussion on here that would make the above relevant.

Perhaps it would be advisable to have a unique user name for every forum you use? That way people couldnt google your username to track what you are doing if thats what is bothering you?
