Hi all

I'm looking to understand more about how to use my camera and I feel I need some focus.

I'm looking at doing either distance learning or wanting to book some lessons with somebody with more knowledge that is happy to spend a few hours a month with me teaching me the basics and acting as a mentor to me on the areas I am interested in.

I have been trying to read from books and when I get out to take pictures I forget everything.

I am based in Surrey near Oxted, junction 6 M25.

If any forum members are local and prepared to help then that would be fantastic.

If anybody knows of anybody local that runs classes then again brilliant.

Alternatively if anybody can recommend some distance learning courses I'll take a look.

Things I am interested in are:
Getting off auto
Understanding the basics

I like wandering around the countryside with my dog and taking pictures
I like Motorsport
I like mountain bikes downhill
I like road cycling
I'm interested in water, waterfalls
I have tried light and star trails

I have a lot to learn but want to start.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Graham, try and get yourself out on one of the meets that are often on here. Lots of people to advise/help.
If you lived nearer to me mate, I would happily take you out and do some shooting with you.
Even if you are a Canon shooter! :D

Kev.

Thanks for the replies, and the PM.

I had a freind who went to a local camera club, wasnt quite what he wanted and he got fed up of photographing cakes, scones, flower arrangements etc and wanted to get out and about they didnt.

The meets sound like a great idea, i have also heard from friends that 'groupon' occasionally have night photo sessions or street photo sessions which they have found to be great.

I find i have always learnt better from trying then being advised what i did wrong and then going away and practisicing and comming back for comment. However as i have said everytime i go out to photograph something i forget what i have read and dont get the results i expected.

Im gonna throw up a couple of examples for you guys in this thread, bit scared of the 'comment and critique' section at the moment.

So im gonna scour the 'meets' thread and see when i can meet up with some of you helpful knowledgeable people.

So here are a few attemps at various subjects that i have been attempting over the past few months.

Sites run by the National Trust, English Heritage, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, etc will often have Photo days at various times during the year, when you will meet up with a pro and a group of other beginners for a days shooting and tuition.

If you have any sites convenient to you it might be worth checking.

While these are unlikely to be targeting the motorsport and cycling side of things, they will cover the basics which are generally applicable.

Graham, Canon have a training division called Experience Seminars. They do photo experience days which are very well run - such as photographing wildlife (large and small) at localities not far from you, I think they also do landscape stuff, water ski-ing etc. Look up their site and see if there's anything you fancy - they also do learner camera craft days: http://www.experience-seminars.co.uk/

Have you tried any of your local college's..they can do A level photography in film or digital.Im currrently doing a extended diploma level 3 in photography then of to uni to specialise in chosen field.Admittedly you learn alot about art/photography history, but its really helped me so much..i would have preffered assistent tutoring, but theres not alot here in cornwall for that. You may get help with funding..i do.Its also really good to meet new people with same interests. You could do part time or full..some even do evening.

Again thanks for all the messages. Im going to investigate a beginners 1 day workshop to help me get up and running and then look into some 1 2 1 type stuff or distance learning. I also have a few local people who are prepared to take me out so big thanks to all.
