Hi all

Think i may have a problem in A and P modes on my D200, when out shooting yesterday i seemed to be getting dark shots when in A mode and also in P mode but when in full manual and speed adjusted then they were fine.

found these settings in the menu
iso auto. on
ev step. 1/3
exp comp/fine tune. 1/3
exp comp. on
center weighted (.) 8

just took these pics as an example, both with flash and WB set to the little light bulb emblem first setting on the left..

first in A mode. i set the aperture camera set the shutter.
f18
1/250
iso 800
exp comp 2.7 ev

For start on the first photo you have -3 EV, so you are making the photo very dark. The shutter speed is on the limits of the flash sync, so the flash will have less of an effect.I think the reason the EV comp is so high(low) is because you have easy exposure comp on in the menu. This changes the EV buy turning the command dial, as opposed to pressing the button and turning the wheel.
Try turning that off, and make sure the there is no EC on when you take a photo.

On the second pic the shutter speed is quite a bit higher, so it will be lighter. But you still have -3 EV, making it much darker than it should be.

Yup, everything is out, exposure compensation is massively under exposing in both, f18 seems a tad small for indoors.... I would do a complete menu reset and start again, see how you get on with nothing dialled in first.

He's mistyped, its actually f/1.8 according to the Exif, but its still -3EV causing the issue.

yes F1.8

ok just turned off the exp comp and took another in A mode, its very very slightly lighter but still shows -2.7EV.

whats the EC?

thanks

EC= exposure comp
There are 2 ways to set it if I recall on a D200. The main way it by presssing the little +/- button and turning the comand dial, or I beleive there is an option in the menu called easy exposure comp, which takes it off the button and just onto the dial.

Looking at your top display is the +/- icon showing? If so, you have exposure comp set and you need to turn it onto 0EV using the button and comand dial.

EC doesn't affect the exposure in manual - if you want to over/under expose you have to set it correctly yourself.

Might have flash +/- compensation on?

from the exif on flickr - still showing as -8/3 [2 and 2/3 under exposing] so somewhere you have a setting doing it. Have a look at the menu option TCR suggests, see if its that

The issue is in A though, so the EC will work. According to both Exifs, flash comp is 0, Exposure comp is -3EV even for the manual mode exposure.

i must be missing something but can see any -/+ buttons/dials anywere other than on side of the view finder to adjust focus. i have gone in to the menu and the exp comp is now set to off and was off in above pics

Find the * QUAL and +/- * buttons on the top of the camera. Hold them both down for a few seconds. The top LCD blinks and everything is back to normal.

EC Stays set in M but doesn't affect the exposure itself. It does affect the meter's output though.

OP:
The EC button is just in front of the shutter button on the right, next to the mode button. Hold it down and rotate the rear dial.

Its the right hand button next to the shutter release. A square cut into triangles with + and -

hahah cant believe i didnt see it the edge of the strap was covering it "doh"

anyway just went into another room and seems much better, i think the lighting in lounge is just messing up the shot. upped the f number to 5.6 and took one in the kitchen and looks bang on..

so going back to the -/+ what do i do with it, its set on -2.7 when i press it..

thanks

Press it and turn the back wheel until the number goes to 0.
Your problem should then be sorted

You only need use it when the camera's meter is fooled by a predominent contrast, such as a snowy day, the camera will try and underexpose due to the large amount of white, so you can tell the camera using the exposure comp, that you actually want more exposure than the camera thinks it needs, as you know that there is a large amount of white in the scene fooling the camera's meter.
