I'm sure this is a trivial question but, I feel inadequate.
I joined the site today. I'm new at photography, and just when I think I'm progressing along fine, I'm get stuck again.
I tried to upload my first photograph and the error was...too high pixels.
Can I do anything about this after the photo has been taken.

HI Jane and welcome to TP.
firstly,
If attaching a file direct from your PC / device, into a thread.
this must not exceed 1024px on the longest side or 350Kb
otherwise it will fail to up load.

I'm guessing you don't have any editing software?
If you do, then its easy to "save for web" when saving set the file size to below 350 kb if attaching directly from your device.

If not, there are a lot of free ones out there

Hi , Jane, I've just joined a few minutes ago, so this is my first post, how did you proceed with your effort at uploading?, which icon did you use above?. Albert

Might be worth adding... don't resize your original picture. Instead make a copy and save it under a different name and resize that as once you've resized your original picture there's no going back without affecting the quality.

A good FREE resizing tool is Easy Thumbnails:

http://www.fookes.com/easy-thumbnails

Can be used for various tasks but as already said do make a backup copy of any photo before you use it.

You can reduce the image size or increase it and also reduce the filesize - try a setting of 80% on the quality setting as a start.

If you don't have any editing software then you can also get a FREE copy of PhotoShop 7 here:

Hi Jane and welcome, you are definitely not inadequate you are just not used to doing certain things on the site that's all. It's the same for all us newcomers, as you can see, the people on here are more than happy to assist with any issues you may have, whether that is with some aspect of the website or issues with taking photographs.
