I'm going away for a couple of weeks (North Wales for a week and then Thassos - not difficult to guess which will involve time on the beach!) and was wondering if anyone had any advice for protecting my camera while at the beach - people do say that sand gets everywhere!

Also, in Thassos I'd quite like to take my camera down to the beach when just relaxing, but am a bit concened about how to keep it secure. Would putting a lock on the bag and attaching it to something (sun lounger, tree or something) work, or would it just attract attention?

I would put it in my rucksack, and then put that in a black bin liner. Sand indeed DOES get everywhere and thats the last thing you want on your sensor.

Just get a Canoe-Bag to put inside the rucksack, or get a Lowe-Pro Dri-Zone camera bag...

Or get a D2x/D3/D3x - they're very well sealed...

I had wondered about putting it in a black bag or similar...will have to remember to pack one!

Any other suggestions?

I put mine in a rucsack and just made sure it was zipped up most of the time.

Bear in mind I was on a beach from 11am till 4pm most days for a fortnight, with 2 young kids and plenty of other kids about.

I did plenty of lens changes and had the camera in and out of the bag several times a day and it was just fine !

Just for info you'll find that North Wales has some pretty spectacular beaches, Llanddwyn on Anglesey for one....it's just a case of being able to fight your way through the wind & rain to get to them ;)

Thanks guys - lots of good options there!

Simonkit - I'm expecting to have some great opportunities for photos in North Wales...and if they're as good as yours I'll be happy!

Does anyone have any suggestions on the security front when I'm at the beach for the day? (e.g. keeping it safe on the beach when I go for a swim or whatever)

err...don't leave it unattended...ever!

WHS!

If I'm planning on a beach day (swimming, snorkelling etc) the kit stays in the hotel, locked to something solid. If I want beach shots, I'll do them before getting myself salty, wet and sandy then (if possible) take the kit back to the room. If it's NOT possible to take the kit back "home", I'll try to make sure I can park in the shade and within sight of where I'll be. Of course, the kit will be out of sight in the boot when the vehicle's unattended, even if the car's in sight.

Put the camera inside a plastic bag inside another plastic bag (you'd be supprised how far sand and water can get) then put it inside your rucksack.

Be aware of opening anything within 2 feet of the ground too. You'll notice that the wind whips up the sand quite a bit down there.

I have a Domke bag which is far from weather proof so I normally store it in a plastic bag to give it some extra cover when I put it on the sand. If yours is well zipped, then it is something you dont have to worry about.
