PS / PS Elements on Linux

Yes
I have just started a photography course and the tutor suggested that we may want to get Photoshop for our own computers at home.

My computer at home runs Linux, which is why I need some advice. I have seen some good reports that CS5 works on Linux, but would prefer to run the latest version if possible.

Does anybody here have experience of running Photoshop CS6 or the latest version of Elements on Linux (under Wine)?

I suggest you download the trial version of elements and see if it works for you, I dualboot win 7 and linux but can not get wine to configure elements fom windows directory, probably user error on my part, but download trial version yourself it is easy to configure that way.

Thanks for responding. Ive downloaded both Photoshop cs6 and photoshop elements 11 trial versions, but no joy on Wine. CS6 wont run because it cant connect to the internet (i dont understand why). Elements wont run either: it just generates an error message.

Did you use any particular guide for installing Elements? The info i found online in various places seems incmplete and i wonder whether im just missing a shared library or something.

I haven't tried (and I dare say never will do) Photoshop in Wine as I tend to use 'native' software - the only photo app that I have tried in Wine is Faststone (installed in response to a thread on these boards), which seems to work well (though I haven't tested the features - just played around with a couple of images).

I know it's not what you're asking, but have you had a look at Gimp (or Gimpshop)? Presumably the tutoring will be Photoshop orientated. It might be worth speaking with your tutor to see just how dependant on Photoshop the tutoring will be and whether he has any familiarity with Gimp.

Have a look at these two links

depending which variant of linux you are using you may get more info through the help forums.
Thank you for this. I've tried installing Photoshop about a dozen or so times now :bang: but it doesn't work for some reason, so I give up (for now). I trust the winehq reports the most; have found various other instructions involving copying over the folders from an installation on a Windows computer (doesn't work) and another set of instruction that seems to rely on a dodgy-looking "portable" version of Photoshop (which I haven't tried).

It seems to install ok (with the workaround) but then when I try to run Photoshop it just says it can't connect to the internet (presumably to activate the trial period) and that is it. Looking at the Ubuntu forums it seems I managed to get further than many; no doubt somebody will manage to make it run eventually.

I have Gimp and I'm not afraid to use it  I just thought it would be nice to see what Photoshop and Elements look like in the flesh and follow the course with it. The tutor has mentioned Gimp so he is aware of it.

I have a 30-day trial of Photoshop on Windows now (I dual-boot, though not excited about it), so will see how it goes. I strongly prefer native and free software too, but there are a couple of programmes that I can't work without; so far I have been fortunate in that everything I need has run well enough on Wine.
