Question about autofocus.

Hi,

Is it possible be able to use the onboard flash on my camera (canon 550d) for assisting AF in very low light conditions but without the flash actually firing on shutter release, if that makes any sense.

If its not possible with the onboard flash should I buy an external flash like the 430ex ii?

p.s. I realise I can use manual focus but the subject matter and my poor skills are making it an uncomfortable challenge atm:|

Just a minor point - this is of course only true if not in fully auto (where the flash will pop up automatically!)

If it is the same as the 7D, you can set flash to "disable" in the menu. It will still function as flash assist, but will not fire when the picture is taken.

Focus, then turn the flash off.

And don't forget to switch the lens to MF as well*!


*on the proviso that you aren't using back button focus.
