For those that (like me) go back a few years - a question i keep asking myself , but cannot come up with an answer.

Before digital i used to develop my own black and white film so sharpness was a combination of lens in camera and lens in enlarger - the biggest prints i ever did were 8 x 10 inches. (had some great results with yashica mat 2 1/4 square and olympus om1 35mm) . Slide film we viewd mostly on a 'slide viewer' maybe 6 x 4 or thereabouts , patterson as i recall) With a projector and 'glass beaded screen' viewed from 10/12 ft all looked really sharp unless you got up really close. NOW

Digital on viewnx (nikon viewer) i can view complete image, 50% or 100% but those last two are really crops - i can see the images on the screen (full screen) and just like the close up on the projected screen shows less sharp .

What is the correlation between the old and the new - how can i judge sharpness of my old slides and prints against my computer screen?

Hope this is not a dumb question.

Scan them at the highest possible resolution and upload them, or make prints and compare them.

You'll quickly see that your D7000 blitzes film images for quality, and at much higher ISO.

Surely sir you jest

It's no laughing matter ;) Let's see what the OP thinks when he's done those comparisons.

I did all that side by side stuff years ago, when my old 350D effortlessly produced images of the same kind of quality I occasionally got from 35mm Kodachrome. My current 5D2 is the equal of stuff I used to shoot on medium format film. And there's no comparison on ISO.

I'm not going back, thanks.

I have a 24" monitor. I also have a 5D2.

When I view the raw files from my 5D2 at 100% on screen, it is effectively the same as printing the image as a picture that is 1.5m x 1m and then viewing it at 0.5m distance. No wonder it might look a bit soft in places......
