Hi folks, I'd like to attemp a couple of portrait shots of my kids as they are growing up far too fast!!! How am I best trying this without any specific equipment? i.e. without any purpose lighting, backdrops etc

What would I be best using for a plain background?

Any help/advice greatfully received

What kit are you using? Do you have any fast lenses or a flashgun etc? Need some more information if you want us to help.

Nah mate! nothing like that at all!!! I wish :)

All I've got is me little Panasonic FZ8 and would like to know what I can do to stand the best chance of getting a 'decent' shot for the album/wall.

Thanks for your reply ;)

Outdoors, good diffused daylight, preferably not bright sun. Big white reflector card to bounce light back into the shadow side, held by your lovely assistant. Maybe a dab of fill-in flash to lighten faces just a fraction and put a sparkle in the eyes. Don't overdo the flash though - not sure how much control you'll have with that camera.

Indoors with window light is also quite good, but beware of camera shake.

You could buy a couple of strobes with slave function. That way you could do high key portrait shots. Then when you upgrade to a SLR you already got strobes for off camera flash.

inside the house against a darker area of the room
outside with a faraway background
use wide open lens..gives better speed
long focal length say 105-135
