I've got a Nikon D610 but ever since buying it, there's been a nagging doubt in my mind that I should have at least given Canon's offerings a chance. This is after all, a lot of money to be spending on a camera and the right choice can be difficult.
So I took my D610 to a local store and tried out my memory card in a 5D Mkiii as well as a 6D. My main test was for noise in low light situations, so I took pictures on all three cameras using 50mm 1.8 lenses, and bumped up the noise to 6400, at various apertures using RAW. My first thought was how the 5D handled... it wasn't for me. The buttons require too much fiddling even co0mpared to the D610 IMO.
Then, I tested the noise output by viewing the files on my PC at home. The 6D was if not exactly the same as my D610, only possibly the tiniest bit cleaner, however the 5D was awful in comparison to the two. I tested the noise by reading the same bottle in the pictures and on the D610 and 6D, I could clearly read the label, whereas the 5D was just a mush of nothingness. There was no camera shake either so I was quite amazed at the difference.
This narrowed my choice down to the 6D over my D610 but when I thought about it; switching over to a Canon setup for a 1% increase in noise clarity would be a daft move. I'd also lose the in-built flash which is useful for operating my SB700 without added equipment, and full-flash on holidays.
EDIT: I've had another look at the files... it's the focus points. I chose the same focus area on each camera but it seems the 5D photo has gone further forward and that's resulted in mushy foreground text on the bottles. Sorry for that! However, the noise of the 5D I would say is comparable to the D610, so for noise alone, I may as well stick to the D610, although the extra focus points of the 5D would be very welcome. Hmmm
I think I'll compare the results of the D610 to the D800E and take it from there.
