Ok, as Amazon does not have the faintest idea what RAID 1external SSD drives are (not a single raid enclose comes up when I search this) I figured I'd ask on here for recomendations of very 'Reliable' external RAID 1 USB SSD hard drives.

It's for use for when I tether to my Apple laptop from my EOS 5D MK4 in studio environments so it does not matter if the drive is mains powered only.

I don't need much capacity because as soon as I get home I dump the days shoot onto my system at home so it only has to be 128GB x 2 so 128GB in total, if it is 250 or 1TB, that's fine, just means I'll have tons of extra room if required.

'Reliability' is the key word here. Transfer speeds don't need to be blistering. I'll be using it on a MacBook Air with USB socket. As long as it can accept 30MB RAW files at a rate of 1 per second I'm good.

Thanks guys.

I'm not sure if I understand your requirements properly because that doesn't sound like a job for RAID to me (the laptop and external drive essentially form a RAID together - they also make your system resilient to losing or damaging any one box). But here's what I do....

Shoot tethered to MacBook & run Chronosync on a 15 min schedule to back up to an external drive. I have just switched to a SanDisk extreme which is waterproof/shockproof etc - previously I used a ruggedized hard drive. At the end of the shoot, back up the LR catalogue to the SanDisk and then eject and put in my pocket.

I then have 2 copies of all data. If I wanted a third I'd buy another Extreme and do a full backup at end of day since MacBook only has 2 USBs.

Nope, don't want to run Chronosync as I don't want to shoot to the Mac's system drive. I just want to shoot to an external HD enclosure with two SSD drives in it so simply looking for recommendations for decent external RAID1 SSD drive, thanks.

Well, the people I know who care a lot about data reliability use G-Technology drives. But I don't think their RAID boxes use SSD because they tend to have huge capacity for video work..

FWIW I've found Apple's interpretation of RAID to be a little odd. I tested a RAID1 set by taking out one of the drives. Apple were far too polite to even tell me there was any kind of problem, it just carried on writing to the drive happily. Until I plugged the other back in. Then all hell broke loose...…………….

I know 2 Drive buffalo NAS units used to be configurable in raid 1, and targeted at business users, but never used one personally.

I think you'll need to buy a 3.5" RAID enclosure and just put up with the larger size. You might need an extra carrier for 2.5" drives but many of the descriptions mention SSD so those should work out of the box.

Once you really start looking there is a good selection of 2.5" RAID enclosures:
