Hi just wondering what you guys do about the rain, drove me insane today was really looking forward to getting out and taking some photos today but we had the most horrible rain all day that would just stop and start at random.

Really infuriating.

so any top tips for adverse weather and keeping your equipment dry? :bang:

On the bright side, it's supposed to get better next week, but just as bad as the rain are the awful overcast and dreary skies.

Living in Scotland mate I would take overcast & dreary any day. Up here that is BBQ & paddling pool weather.

LOL

I'm not that far from your wet and wild land ;)

Our only positive is that we are in the rain shadow of the Pennines.

I am not too bad either to be fair, ochil hills 20 miles in one direction and the campsie hills the other way. Should make for some great landscape photos though...if the bloody rain goes off.

Just got my camera and there is only so many photos of the dog you can take. Also every time I try to take a shot of my son he screws up his face, closes his eyes and says cheese a bit like this :D.

Still next week we might get a dry day.

Just come back from Stirling, went to take some shots of the Roman road at Sherrifmuir ,but just too wet to get out of car, rained all the way back but funny once I hit English side of border sun came out?

Thats a pity, although don't feel too bad we have had about 1 day of nice weather in the last 20.

typical July in Scotland.

i hate this weather, was almost going to post my own ranting thread.

I only shoot cars and this weather is a nightmare! Was supposed to be shooting an M3 today but surprise surprise it is pouring outside :(

I suppose if you are out doors you could get one of these fishing tents that have a large opening at the front yet they are not too big that they would be a pain to carry.

Could give you enough shelter as long as the rain is not too bad.

I'm not scared of getting my kit wet, it is weathersealed, the main issue I find is keeping water off the filters.

If it is heavyish rain I'll lay a microfibre cloth across the camera and lens to keep it dry.

If it is really coming down I have a Matin rainjacket for it.

More important for me are the skies, featureless grey is my enemy, stormy rainclouds can be superb.

Why not practice some indoor lighting techniques

sounds good, any suggestions or tutorials. Before I have just been playing around in AV & TV mode and seeing what difference shutter speed makes to my shots and the same with f-stops.

You could try useing a white card as reflector. Black card as light absorber. To see how you can use them to modify a single light source.

I'm ultra-careful about things like lens changing in the wet (usually done inside my jacket) but otherwise, I just pin my faith in the weather sealing that Nikon applies to the kit.

Mind you, I pushed it the other day; sat in a boat on Carsington water in driving rain everything was soaked and my Vertex 200 was sodden right through..... two days later the footwell of my car where I put my bag was still sopping wet, but more worryingly, my (weather sealed) 17-55mm developed a big condensation spot on the inside of the front element.... I think I pushed it beyond its limits. Works fine now but it does worry me slightly as to how much of a drenching kit can take.

The only time I really freak out is when shooting near heavy surf or near crashing waves on rocks, where there's tons of spray floating around.

wet weather is great for doing some street photography, you get people hustling about more and the expressions on faces can be quite fun in bad weather.

+1

I'm badly wanting to get out with the camera, as there's a few pics I want to re-take under more favourable conditions, but all there's been for weeks and weeks is rain, rain and more blinking rain.

If it's not raining, it's blowing a gale, if not that then the sky is just one dreary white haze that makes me depressed just looking at it, never mind taking pics of it.

Bah humbug! Or whatever the summertime equivalent is.

Rained all day yesterday and was out with the family, when we were on the way home it cleared there was the most beautiful sunset over the hills with still a bit of cloud around. Would have made a great shot but never had the kit with me. Today looks much nicer hopefully I will get out this evening if its nice.

You need to strengthen your patience for it is important in photography. I'm pretty sure that the rain won't stay for long. Why don't you instead do another interesting indoor stuff like having a movie marathon with your family?:)
