I want to increase the RAM in my old Dell PC, at the moment it's running 1gb ECC ddr 2100 266mh 184 pin, the computer tech who services our computers says I don't need to get ECC ram just normal ddr, he says you can mix them without problems and it's much cheaper.
Any advise from the experts here, the computers only used for PS and lightroom, not for games but I have had a "not enough ram" message from PSCS4 a couple of times. Can I really mix ram like this??? Wayne

There are some motherboards that do not like ECC and NON ECC ram mixed! Although on a couple of these it worked when I swapped them round !! So that the non ECC was in the first slot - bizarre yes
 
Before you buy, it might be worth giving Crucial Memory a visit. There's a little application that you can download which will scan your system and tell you what you can do to upgrade it. Their memory is quite cheap too.

Highly recommended.

Yes ordinary DDR will run perfectly well the only difference will be ...if your original memory is 266 and you put in 333 or faster then the new ram will run at 266 ....word of warning though DDR2 will not fit so forget that
 
I have to say that whilst the upgrade may work, I suspect that the root cause of your problems is lying in a bloated Windows install. 1Gb of RAM (even presuming you are losing 32-64mb to onboard video) should be enough with XP, and it should manage the memory accordingly.

Are you 100% certain there are no nasties (or damage from old attacks) on your machine? Can you uninstall the software you don't need...

CCleaner is also worth a look too.

By all means upgrade the RAM, it will help - but a tidy Windows installation is key to a speedy machine, regardless of age.
 
Could be a virtual memory issue, which could be lack of hdd space or lack of pysical memory, quite an ole pc with 1gb ddr is probably a bit under specced for CS and LR but more ram will never hurt, so go for the upgrade and try a tidy up as well, maybe change your virtual memory settings and see what memory level is set in CS as well
