I am using lightroom and CS4 but despite having 4gb of RAM my PC still slows up a bit, what sort of amount to people on here have inside their machines?

I was thinking of upping it to 6 or 8gb

Which OS are you using ?

If vista, I think only the 64-bit version can support RAM above around 3.5GB so it would be pointless to upgrade. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think grey-squirrel is right - I use V64 and have 8GB on my desktop and quad core. No problems here... :)

Correct, 32bit Operating system can only handle 3.5gb of memory. 64bit Operating system can handle more memory than you can purchase (or install).

I am indeed using Vista x64 with workstation mb capable of 4 GPU's, Quad Core and 1gb Nvidia GPU.
Maybe i'll put a couple more gb in.

And 32bit o/s can only address up to 4gb of memory, including your GPU so if you had 4gb of RAM and a 1gb GPU you would only see 3gb of RAM available to the CPU

It doesn't work quite as simply as that.

First of all, this issue is only seen with Windows home OSs afaik, some other 32bit operating systems can use PAE which allows over 4GB, Windows could use this but doesn't, with Microsoft citing driver compatibility issues as the reason.

Secondly, you are right in saying that 4GB can be addressed, however the VRAM on your GPU is not deducted in such a linear fashion (even with a 1GB graphics card you will often see 3.25GB) and there are other addresses to take into account also.

Typically your average Windows 32bit user will see somewhere between 3.25GB and 3.5GB useable. Vista SP1 however will tell you the physically installed level of RAM, in an effort to eliminate problems from people who don't understand the above thinking something is wrong with their computer.

What size pics are you using in photoshop?

I have a dual core 3ghz and 4gb of ram and have never had any slow downs with photoshop. I can open loads of raw files and fling em about whatever and it never seems to slow down.

Aye, I'm running Vista64, 4Gb of RAM and a decent (overclocked) C2D and PS4 absolutely flies.... What anti-virus you running out of interest??
