RAW and Image Sharpness

Ok maybe a silly question but....

Is there any reason why I should not set Image sharpness to 10 (maximum) on my 40D in picture styles when shooting RAW.

And why would I need to have a setting of image sharpness of 0 when any image I take obviously looks very much out of focus at this setting?

Thanks

Alan

As far as I know, when you shoot in Raw, it doesn't apply any sharpening in the camera, so the setting won't make any difference. The RAW file is just what the camera records, when you shoot JPEG it takes this data, the processes it (sharpening, colour adjustment etc).

If you shoot RAW, your images will almost definitely need sharpening to get them looking how you want!

I have my 5D set to sharpness 3 & my 50D to 5. My 20D seems fixed on 1 but I manually change to 5 in DPP. Anything over 7 looks horrendously artificial. Doesn't matter really as it can be changed to anything without loss of quality when using RAW files.

:agree:

Settings like sharpness are for JPEG, not raw (note it's not RAW) files, unless the Canon utility can process raw files the way Nikon's Capture NX does, as it retains such settings, whereas Lightroom, Photoshop, etc don't.

Same here - if you select 'auto' on your RAW editor, it will apply the in-camera settings that you've chosen - otherwise you'll have to apply any sharpening in PP...
It's a good way of retaining the flexibility of having a RAW file to work on later, whilst at the same time as having a fast workflow for 'quick' jobs that need to be 'out-the-door' fast...
