I have a Canon 500d and if I shoot in RAW its fine, Jpeg fine, but if I set it to do both it just produces 2 jpegs?!? Ive no idea why, any ideas?

Hmm strange, not to insult your intelligents but you put them onto your computer and it shows the same image as a jpeg then a jpeg again in the file name?

Is there a reason you shoot in both? I used to shoot in both as my computer wouldnt view the raw image, only the jpeg, so if its for that reason you can download a plug-in that allows yout to view a raw image like a normal jpeg.

Is that a Microsoft plugin?

I found that shooting raw and jpeg appears the same but if you hold the curser above the first photo it should show all the information about the camera setting and that photo will be the raw one.

I beleive a RAW file can contain a JPEG 'preview', maybe your system is using that to display the picture ?

Yes, it just opens the raw image in windows picture viewer like it would a jpeg.

It saved me loads of times opening jpegs to view which to keep then go see which raw file it was etc.

Cheers, that's what I have been having to do.

I normally shoot in M and I was doing both because I cant view my RAW without opening it in photoshop and its annoying not knowing which picture is which. I thought that maybe the jpg was letting me see the image on the RAW file so opened both in photoshop and they both came up as jpg. I'll try and get the plug-in Robbo said about to save time, cheers.

Try DPP which should be on the canon disc that came with your camera...

Can edit Raw files and batch process out...

Raw files should be labelled .CR2 when viewed thro windows explorer...

Since you can't actually view a Raw file (it's just a load of data) you need a JPEG to see anything. This is what appears on the LCD after you've taken a picture - a tiny JPEG generated so that you can see something.

This JPEG is tagged to the Raw file so when you open it in post processing that's what you see. And if you shoot Raw and JPEG, they will appear side by side and look identical.

But underneath the Raw/JPEG image with its different image code, the Raw file is there in unadulterated form. You can then modify it in any way you like and when you do that JPEG generated for viewing will change accordingly.
