I'm a bit confused about raw file sizes. My canon 40D raw file size is 12.4MB.
I'm considering changing to a used canon 1D Mk2.
This camera has a raw file size of 8.3 MB. Does this difference is file size mean that the larger file size is less compressed and contains more information?

I see, so this doesn't reflect on the quality of the raw image then?

Well, in theory more mp=" better" pictures. However thats two very different sensors. Although the 1D maybe smalller, it has a crop of 1.3 against the 40d's 1.6, and being a "pro" camera, I'm sure the sensor in the 1D is superior to the 40d. I don't know the anser....but I'm sure there are plenty of sites out there with opinions!

Remember that a 1D will only take EF lenses, so any EF-S lenses you have will not work with it.

40 is 14bit and 1D2 is 12bit. That also accounts for the smaller RAW size. I'd still go for 1D as perfectly focused 8mp photos are infinitely better than slightly out of focus 10mp ones. For landscapes 40D / 5D types are much nice to work with.

what about the pixel density of these cameras...Mp/cm^2

larger sensor i would think more preferable...to Mp or file size
