I know another boring question about RAW files.

Ihave just started shhoting in RAW (brave at last) and when my images come up as thumbnails they have BMP next to them, when I know they should have somehting like CR2  what is this please as I am trying to send a RAW image to someone and cannot for the life of me understand how to do it.

Rather be out in the hide !!!!!!!! than this processing lark !!!

Please can anyone out there help me

BMP is a Bitmap file.
Not au fait with Canon, but it suggests a menu setting somewhere needs adjusting (in camera or PC). You could be saving files in the wrong format

"send a RAW image" .......... a RAW file (in your case it should be CR2) is just data. There is no image until it is processed. If you send someone a RAW image they will need to process it.

What is Bitmap? I am trying te resize a raw image to send it to someone so they can do something with it but I cannot open any of my raw images on the computer

Your computer is doing something strange here, if they were truly bitmaps the computer would open them without difficulty.

What software are you using to manipulate your raw files?

I have CS4 elements 7 and Bridge and not one will open them
The only one I can open them i n Ihave been playing is Digital Photo professional, all the others are telling me they cannot support the file.

If I try in Bridge it is telling me "it is not the right kind of document"

In Bridge goto help>updates and see if there is a more recent version of acr. The 7D may need a newer version.

I think it may be an Adobe Camera RAW problem.
Camera RAW 6.1 (6.3 beta) is for CS5, since you have CS4 I think the one you need to download and install is Camera RAW 5.7

Briefley a RAW file is like a digital negative.

You cannot "do" anything to it, that's why you can;t resize it.

First you have to convert it to a Jpeg or a tiff file then you can work on it.

I would expect the Adobe software you have to be able to convert the Canon RAW files to jpeg or tiff.

If you have Canon Zoombrowser on your PC that will also do the conversion for you.

I would urge you to get your head round Canon's DPP software though. It's a bit marmite for most people but try it out. If you have any of the Canon software that came with your camera on your PC you can download if for free from the Canon website.

Can you not send a RAW file then it has to be Jpeg or TIFF ? for someone else to work on it if they want to?

You can of course send a raw file to someone, but it will be a large file, especially from a 7D, and may not make it all the way through the email system. You could host the file yourself, or stick it in a shared Dropbox or Skydrive area, or use a free service like Yousendit or Rapidshare to host the file.

Whichever option you choose, it should be no problem sending a raw file, so long as the person at the other end has suitable software to open it.

As for your files coming up as .BMP files, that makes no sense at all. They are .CR2 files (unless you've somehow renamed them).

Yes you can. So long as the recipient can open the file they can work on it. and if you have something like lightroom you can alter the raw file, export it as a raw and the recipient will then have the original file info plus your alterations

Hi Nicki
If you have the original Canon software and use EOS utility to download from camera CR2 files are placed in designated folder. You should then be able to send the unprocessed files to another user from this folder. In DPP choose file folder then when thumbnails appear double click on picture which opens RAW file processing. If this does not open go View/Tool Palette. You now process files. If you go File/Convert and save(top menu) you can save Tiff/Jpeg. If you also click Tools (top menu) you can transfer to editing software. Mine say's 'transfer to photoshop' so I prexume your will have elements. From there you can save TIFF or Jpeg and send on to others.
Hope this explanation helps

How do I re name them back please ?

Err..... by using whatever technique you (or your computer) used to rename them to .BMP files in the first place, except specifying .CR2 as the new file extension instead of .BMP.

I know that's a flippant answer, but I really think you should get to the bottom of how they ever ended up as .BMP files in the first place. If you don't know what caused that then you are likely to face continued problems down the road. I suggest you fix the cause of the problem, not just the symptom.

Are you absolutely certain that the files really do now have a .BMP extension? It's not just some weird icon/thumbnail that is being misleading, is it? If you're using Windows rather than one of those niche operating systems, have you enabled the display of file extensions in explorer and elsewhere? By default the extensions are not shown. In explorer, if you switch to the "details" view, you should see a file listing similar to this for a folder....

The .CR2 extensions are plainly visible. Do you see the extensions listed like that, or the filenames only?

If you really do have to rename the files, then within windows (AFAIK) you'll need to open up a CMD window, navigate to the folder in question and rename them with the command....

ren *.BMP *.CR2

Otherwise you could download some free renaming software. There are various free options suggested here - http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-rename-utility.htm.

The only thing I can think of is that I dropped a book on the key board today and all sorts of things have gone haywire, :bang: sorry for being such and idiot, but I am not a tecchie and will have to get someone to have a look for me when they can.

Thanks anyway for your help

I think it would be quite an incredible fluke for a dropped book to turn your .CR2 files into .BMP files. Can you open up a folder in Explorer and get a file listing displayed with the "Details" option as the view? Are the files really listed as .BMP files? I'd be really surprised if they were.

You don't know me I had turned my computer screen 90 degrees and had to get help turning it back  :shrug:

No hoper I am afraid.:bang:

LOL...now that is funny and you are in seriously need of help.
did the ACR 5.7 help

Yes you will need to udate CS4 to the latest version of camera raw (you need to have at least adobe camera raw version 5.6 to read the 7D's raw files), you will also need to download the latest raw viewer codec from the canon support site

To update camera raw, run CS4, click on help at the top, then on updates and follow any instructions given.

To update the codec go to canon's uk site, and click on support, then software downloads..
Just pick your camera from the drop down menu, click on the "english" tab of the next screen, then click on canon raw codec 1.7,scroll down the next screen and click on the .zip file under "download, then tick the agreement boxes on the next screen and download, once downloaded unzip and instal it, you will then be able to see preview pics of your raw files.

Can you install ACR from within the Help tab in CS, I thought it was a plug in, but then again maybe I'm wrong

Try this, I think your file associations have got mixed up:

To rename your .BMP "raw" files: just right click the picture icon

go to "open with"

Select "Choose program" at the bottom of the list of options

Select "DPP"

Hope it helps

Just thinking that 'bitmap' is also a generic name for a non-vector image file, not only a *.bmp file...

If it is a laptop and you are coming into Oxford city center anytime soon then drop by my department at the University (can PM you with details) and I will get it sorted for you.

it doesn't matter. My camera puts them out as .TIF files, which is useful in a way as Windows will then show the JPEG preview as a thumbnail, without me needing to install extra software to read raw thumbnails. They are still raw files though no matter what, and opening them in a proper raw-capable editing program will allow you to use all the benefits of raw.
