RAW/.NEF Image processing PC applications

Does anyone know any applications for a windows PC which is similar to Adobe Photoshop which can edit .NEF files so I don't have to constantly have to convert them into another format as I always shoot in RAW format. If there isn't any free then any which are relatively cheap as I am a student and don't have that much money. Thanks

I use Nikons Capture NX or capture one. I'm not sure if you can get either with a student licence though, I know you can for photoshop and lightroom though?

Can the Nikon programs convert into other formats after editing if needed as well?

Lightroom student and teacher editions only £60ish you can get it in currys. Other than that there are many places to get software on the Internet nudge nudge wink wink.

View NX2 and Capture NX-D can both convert NEF to TIFF and JPEG if you want.

Rawtherapee seems to work with most types of raw - works fine on my D610 nefs and I actually prefer it to Lightroom. I like the way it's open source rather than proprietary as well.
