Hi all

now im using Raw pretty much full time im wondering about the various quality options.

My D200 has Raw basic, normal and fine options. what should i be setting it at for general use? and is there much difference in image quality or is it a case of less info is gathered in basic compared to fine, certainly less images held on my card in fine compared to the others..

cheers

You don't get these choices with RAW - these choices refer to jpeg files.

see from page 28 in your manual!

RAW is RAW. There's no basic, normal or fine associated with RAW*, when you take a photo in RAW it's pretty much a straight dump of the sensor data to the memory card. The basic, normal and fine options are for JPEGs. You shoot either in RAW, JPEG, or RAW and JPEG. With the latter option the basic, normal, fine setting only affects the JPEG being saved to the memory card.

*Some later model Nikons allow you to adjust the bit depth and compression of the RAW files, but this is again nothing to do with the basic, normal or fine settings.

Page 28 of the D200 manual details the format and quality settings. It's available as a non printable PDF version here

With some Canon bodies you can select "S-RAW" which is just the same as RAW, but in a smaller file, so obviously you will lose some detail.
