i am converting, raw in acr, then to elements 9,how should i save the files dng, tiff, jpeg???? i dont take huge amounts of photos, i might want to print a few, and send a few via the web,can anyone help me with a simple workflow system, thank you

I have always converted to TIFF files and saved them, preserving the quality of the original RAW file.

If I need to send via e-mail I make a copy of the TIFF file and convert the copy to JPG for that purpose, I almost always print from the TIFF files, others may do it differently.

the only problem with saving in TIFF is the size of the files, they are rather large.

I also save the original RAW files on disks or a seperate HDD.

John:)

For me i shoot raw then go through all the ones i donot want/are bad and then PP the ones I would like to do something with.
I keep all the files that I have done nothing with as sods law I would want to look at them again and do something different to another puc.

I store all my pics on PC then external hard drive and also on my laptop just in case

thanks for that john, and spike, making a lot more sense now,so if i keep a copy of each, raw for archives, tiff for print, jpeg for web,or just make a jpeg when needed, its a lot to take in for a nooby, lol.

I open all my raw files in lightroom 3, the majority of the time I will then use Photoshop to tweak a few levels etc and save as a psd. These all stay in a folder I name Finals or Edits. I then save a copy as a Jpeg in a subfolder for the web etc. Whenever I send anything to print I use my psd document and save as a tiff.
This works for me, in my opinion there is no right or wrong answer. Aslong as you keep your Raw files backed up your ok.

Shoot raw - edit in Lightroom. Period. You don't need psd or tiff files - just output what you need when you need. The raw is untouched and always available for further editing.

Unless you don't backup your LR cat. etc. Otherwise you will need to re edit the raw files from scratch if you move to another drive/computer. I always save a tiff of my final edits and export as jpg for printing/web. I can always go back to the tiff file even if I don't have the raw edits years later. I still keep the raw files with them though.

It takes up more room but storage is cheap and its just easier to know that I have a tiff of my final version that might be a little more future proof than a raw file with edits.

The other option, depending if your camera can do it, is to shoot both Raw and JPEG at the same time. I tend to do this so I can quickly show a client an image as a JPEG knowing that the finished conversion in PS from the RAW file will be better.
