Re-Formatting SD cards for new camera

Yes
I have just gone from a Canon 550D to the 60D.
All my SD cards were formatted in the 550D. The 60D manual says I need to re-format any cards that have been used in another camera.
Would it affect the camera's performance if I did not? Seeing they have already been formatted in anothe Canon camera.

I realise I would loose all my images on the cards, which would be a pain, but if it affects the camera speed wise, I suppose I would have to do it. I feel a external hard drive coming my way!

Thanks

 so you mean you keep the images on the SD cards all the time ?

If so thats just crazy, once you have taken the photo's and got back home transfer them to your PC then i normally format the card once i'm happy that the photo's are backed up.

Formating in the camera takes a very short amount of time.

Edit: and yes an external hard drive or some form of backup is a must.

I format before every shoot, on event days, I format every 1/2 hour or so after swapping cards. Why would you need to keep the images on your card???
