I'm going to have a photo blown up on to a cavas size for home, to do that I need 10 xMP, how do they get photo's on the side of lorry's? What sort of camera and MP's do they need for that?

You'd probably find that the pictures on the side of lorries are not very good quality really.
You only see them moving from a distance, people tend to look at photos in great detail, so paranoia sets in.

it all depends on the size you want printed, the viewing distance and the quality of the print.

rough note: higher the quality the smaller the picture will be. (print terms)

everyday prints, e.g posters, magazines, require 300dpi

you'll find most large formats are printed at 72 - 150 dpi (huge wall prints, canvas)
though you'll find most of those lorry side displays are at 72dpi.

even then if you had a vector format print, you could go as big as you want without loosing quality ;)

The photos from my D50 (6MP) have been printed at 30" x 20" with no loss of quality. Any 6MP+ DSLR will produce images capable of being printed at wall-canvas size.

One of the reason pros use 20+ MP DSLRs, and the even higher MP digital MF backs on Hasselblads etc is so they can blow them up uber-huge

I've just had a 150cm x 100cm print done at PosterXXL and that was from my 10D.

Regards,
Carl.

Something like Genuine Fractals or even Photoshops own inbuilt interpolation capability will do a good job of upscaling if your pics need it. :)
