Hi , im looking for a flash . Can anyone recomend a decent one for my cannon 450d please . Also a half decent tri-pod . What kind of price should i be looking to pay and would it benefit me to buy second hand ? Thanks

I got the Sunpak PF30x as my first flash gun.

Good points:
> Cheap - about £50 I paid
> Canon E-TTL - automatic!
> Simple to use
> Bounce control - you can tilt it
> Good temperature and coverageild feels good
> Overall bu

Bad points:
> A little slow to recycle
> The one I bought needed to be re-programmed with the new firmware to work
> No manual mode - Need e-TTL signal to work
> No swivel feature
> On / Off button feels a bit dodgy

Overall - great first flash but limited options to use off-camera. Misses swivel feature and can be slow but otherwise good at this price point - similar priced Chinese flashes have no auto mode.

I have a Jessops 360AFD that I bought off of here for less than £40. It's a good basic flash that does a lot for not much cash. It has two directional swivel, so you can bounce it off walls and / or bounce it off the ceiling. It comes with a diffuser and a bounce card. Recycle times are a bit slow and it doesn't have HSS. But I would argue that if you require HSS you would normally be better off with a reflector.

Hi there, depending on whether youl be happy with just the one or if youl be using a few... have a look at the nissin di622 and di866 (the mark 2 versions)
theyre about £110 and £180 new respectively.

ive been having a look around for my 550d and if youve got the cash.. the di866 sounds like a very very good option. if your budgeting, the di622 appears a safe bet.. you can get 2nd hand 622s for about £60 but there are few of them and even fewer 2nd hand di866's

Re canon flashes - if youve got the money then fair enough, but they are way too expensive for me

hope that helps,

Pete : )

You can pick up a 2nd hand Canon 550ex for around £135. Ok it's not a 580exII but a great flash none the less. Good tripods - take a look at RedSnapper. HTH
