Having had my canon 1000d (and tamron 70-300mm lens)for a month or so now i`ve come to the conclusion i need to look at how i`m going about my photography so i`m asking anyone who can help. To say having spent what i consider a lot of money on my camera and i`m quite disapointed with most but not all my pictures i`d be interested in peoples opinions on how to go about doing things what direction you took when shooting full auto, program mode etc. I will post some pictures up when i`ve sussed that out as well thanks for looking Harvey

Hi Harvey, you need to look at why you bought the camera in the first place.

Do you just want to record things that happen as a reminder, do you have a particular strength or passion for a type of photography, do you want to try photogaphy out to see if you're any good then develop your skills????

There are many factors to photography, to say you're dissapointed is a bit harsh on yourself. getting a dslr doen't make you a photographer, it's a tool to work with that helps give you more choice and control over pictures.

Look at what you have taken, compare it to what you thought would be the end result, look at what you did right, what you did wrong, learn and develop your skill and learn what your camera can achieve.

Try out some of the competions on here, some are for prizes, some are not, all are designed to help you think about why you press the shutter.

Good luck and get posting some pics, there are some great people on here willing to help you out.

Phil.

The reason for taking up photography was collect nice looking images in and around me,i don't have a particular style I'd like to specialise that will come as I hopefully progress .I suppose I'm ultra critical because ive equated a more expensive camera with better pictures.

It's more the technical side, for example I'm just coming to grips with whether to shoot in raw or jpeg and why, again it goes back to my I've got a expensive why do I need to mess around with the image to get a good result but I am getting there

I just noticed where you are. Just down the road from me.

Just noticed as well, also been on your flikr page I'm guessing you did shoot them locally lol

Don't be so harsh on yourself...I was exactly the same when I bought my 450d, coming from a decent point and shoot, I was really disappointed with my photos compared to the P&S....a few months on, and i've learnt more about the camera and how it works, the relationship between all the settings, and i'm finally beginning to be happy with a few shots I get.

It's a learning curve, and quite a steep one at first, but stick with it, and when you get that first shot that you personally think is "perfect", it makes it all worthwhile.

They were at Chessington on a zoo day.

Hopefully will get some more up soon.

hard to find inspiration? maybe you can try to think about a thematic: happiness, joy, sadness, though...
and take a set of pictures trying to match the theme, you will think about what effect can improve the meaning of an image rather than taking random pictures of car, dogs, pigeons!

Have you got children I have a 3 year old he all ways keep me motivated and gives me plenty of reasons to take my camera.

And actually love portrait photography now and I guess its from that

I can honestly say that the learning curve for me has been reading this forum, this has ranged from picking up tips from technical points discussions to looking at what points people identify when giving critique on another person's photos.
