Recommend a 11.6" netbook

Off travelling in December and in need of a netbook to take with me, a friend recommended that I get a 11.6" one as screen is slightly bigger than a normal netbook for light editing and the specs tend to be better. It has to be able to run lightroom so between 2-4gb ram and 320-500gb HD.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a lightweight laptop for travelling? A macbook air would be ideal but out of my budget

What's your budget like?

I was in this situation a while back and eventually went for an Asus U36JC which costs about £650 but really is worth the premium over a netbook with little loss in portability. It has a 13.3inch screen, i5 processor, 4GB RAM and is a joy to use.

I am noticing a trend whereby any thread opened which involves someone suggesting a Mac involves you acting like a troll. I suggest that if you do not have anything useful to add then don't bother. The OP has asked for recommendations for a 11.6" laptop and the MBA fulfils this role so it is not unreasonable for someone to suggest it (although the OP already said it was outside of his price range). Macs, Windows PCs and Linux machines all have their advantages and disadvantages and this is not the place to discuss them. If it is outside of the OP's price range or they need or want Windows it is for them to decide. If you had replied with something useful then maybe I would not have said anything. Read the rules.... Deliberately trolling carries a 5 point infraction.

I deleted two posts but accidentally missed selecting the soft delete option. It removed you swearing so can't be bad. Free speech does not include breaking the rules. If someone says something you don't like use the RTM.

Why did you delete those posts? I agree with you putting <sigh>, no big deal though! This thread has been utterly useless, literally not one suggestion.

Ooh, let's all use the <sigh> then....

The best way to research is google, price comparison sites and reading review sites and make up your own mind.

You didn't respond to the question regarding how much money you have to spend which makes the replies a little difficult.

I made a suggestion that I feel is the best tool for what you wish to achieve but you can't afford it - not really my issue.

A netbook with low power CPU and ram is not really suited to running lightroom or doing anything more than email/web browsing.

Then you get less than helpful response from other people who feel the need to be clever.

I wouldnt have bothered asking if I were you :lol:

Thanks for that Sherlock. I have been doing exactly that but I spent a minute posting here to ask if anyone from a photography forum had a decent recommendation for a netbook. Since it would probably have been used for a similar purpose. Rather than your average amazon buyer who may use it for the basics.

My budget is around £300, maybe a bit more if it's really decent.

I know a macbook air would be a good tool for the job, I use mac myself but my MBP is too big to take. I already said this in my original post but you still suggested it, what was the point in that? It's not a case that I can't literally afford it but when you're spending £2k on flights and about another £4k on spending money, blowing another £1k on a laptop isn't really within my budget. A friend (also a photographer) has taken a cheaper 11.6" netbook around the world and it seems perfectly capable of running lightroom so what you're saying is utter rubbish. The actual spec of the air isn't that much better anyway, plus the HD is too small.

No one would have to try to be clever if you could read.
 
Just ask your friend what netbook he has and problem solved. :)
I would recommend a 13" laptop. You can get ones that are just over a 1kg heavy. Like acer timeline or x series( don't remember how are they called now)
Mine old 3810t is small and light.
 
Well funnily enough I did think of that but it's a Fujitsu thats no longer available.
