Recommend a compact please.

Hi, I’m off to the USA on holiday in May & a mate has asked me to pick up a decent everyday compact camera.

Not really up to-date on compacts so thought the masses may be able to offer some advice?

I know the likes of Circuit City & Best Buy should have the best deals but which compact would you recommend as a good all-rounder?

Warranty is not an issue as we have family out in the US.

Looking around the £100 $160 mark.

Any advice gratefully received.

If you can stretch (or get 2nd hand) , have a look at the Panasonic Lumix range.
Heard nothing but good things about them.
 
Can't really go wrong with the panny range, either a tz8 or tz10:thumbs:
The tz18 and tz20 are out now but the tz10 is still better
 
Canon IXUS or Panasonic Lumix. Can't go wrong with either.
I have the TZ8, and it's a great camera, but I'll warn you now that the ISO performance is quite poor, compared to other compacts.

Agree, Canon or Panasonic if budget allows if not Samsung. I did have a Samsung WB500 and I was very happy with it, at the time it was one of the cheapest compacts which had a 24mm wide lens-which I wanted. Also had a great HD video function
