If I created a new domain name that redirected to my website, would google use the seo on my existing site for the new domain name?

I.e. if the new domain name was location specific (had shropshire in it) would that impact on the google rating on my site that doesn't have shropshire in it?

I hope that makes sense :-)

Google HATES redirects and you would not see any benefit from having a seperate domain that redirects. Although it helps to have 'shropshire' in the url this is not the key.

The key is to get links to your webiste with the 'title tag' containing the phrase you want to link. For example if you want to rank well for 'photographer shropshire' add your webiste to directories blogs (even in your sig on here) etc.

So rather than:

http://www.coleyturnerbrown.co.uk

Use

photographer shropshire


Links to your webiste are key to ranking well. Set yourself a task of getting 1 link a day to your webiste and in 6 months you will see the benefit. More links = Better Rankings = More Visitors

Google thinks of each link to your site like a vote. The more votes you get the more 'important' you are. Hope this helps

Fortunately, I've not spent much time on linking yet, so not many to change.

One a day for 6 months sound like a challenge though :-)

I wouldnt put too much emphasis on the domain name and google.. google likes a lot of things together and wouldnt list you any higher on domain name alone.. coupled wiht other things yes...

I am a sports photogrpaher.. I have constantly been in google top ten for the search "sports photography" for many years now.. quite a lot in the top 5 ... thats a very generic search so its good to be a top find... my domain name is kipax.com ?
 
If you want to increase visitors get one a week, if you want to dominate Google 1 a day. 10 mins a day will pay out dividends for years!

Use this tool to see how many links your competitors have and the anchor/ title text they use. This will give you an idea of how many links you need to 'beat' them in search engines and achieve number 1.

Thanks for that, I've no problem putting in the hours, it's finding that many places to put links that baffles me :-)

I think that's the beauty of being very established. Us newbies have to fight for every google page :-)

1. Website Directories (search for photography related ones, http://photographyhomepages.com/ etc)
2. Link Exchanges (exchange links with framers, photographers, studios etc)
3. Blogs (When you comment on most blogs you can also add your web address)
4. Article Submission (write a good article and submit it to an article submission sites. you are credited as the author with a link to your site)
