Regarding a purchased filter

Hey there guys,

I've just purchased a filter from ebay. It was meant to be a Hoya 52mm FL-Day filter. However, upon arrival and inspection, I noted a few things which have give me doubt. The side of the filter says "Hoya 52mm FL Japan". The filter itself has a turning-ring, and when held up against an LCD has the same effect as a circular polariser. It's also got a gray, rather than a pink, tinge to it.

Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but does this sound more like a circular polariser than an FL-Day? Considering the markings on the side, is it a fake? Or is it a type of FL-Day that I don't know about?

Best regards,
Craig.

Doesn't sound like an FL day to me - usually these are magenta to correct fluorescent light for film.

Could be a type I've not heard about, but I'd expect an FL day to be magenta.

put your polarised sunnies on
hold the filter up to the light
rotate it
if the sky gets dark it's a polariser
if the sky stays the same shade - it isn't
