Rent studio for portrait work?

I was just curious if most/some of the people that run portrait businesses rent out a studio somewhere, or just do it in your own home? Or maybe make house calls?

Because I've got my own lights from when I did have a studio I either visit peoples homes or hire local halls for bigger groups. It works out cheaper than hiring a studio. However, if I was starting out and having to factor in the cost of lights, backdrops etc would mean hiring a studio would make far more sense.

We have a large studio in Birmingham, and yes we do hire the facility out to both pro and amateur togs. If clients want/need portraits done in there home or on location, we have a portable set up and we go off-site.
