I have spent most of the day phoning and visiting various shops and companies trying to get hold of a 2nd hand Mac computer, PCW said to me they do come in and are sold as refurbs but its that rare you have more chance of getting hold of some rocking horse muck. Then 1 smarmy sales man showed me an Apple iMac MC413B/A he asked what I would use it for he said oh this is just the job and really cheap.

Cheap I was sat head high to the price tag, I then asked a question he looked at me as if I had taken a dump in his sandwich box, the question I asked was "Do you have to keep updating your OS like you do with Windows?" I thought it was reasonable he then started talking in Swahili or some other foreign language and I looked at my Mrs as if to say " I think I have had a stroke and no longer understand English" basically he was giving me the full spec.

We left the building, I felt like a child would if it had to leave a sweet shop empty handed.

Anyway if anyone finds any rocking horse muck please send it this way

Julian.....

Cheap is relative ;)

You don't have to keep updating anything, MacOS updates itself in the background much in the same way that Windows does BUT with MacOS all Apple's applications update themselves at the same time not just the OS.

2nd hand Apple machines do come up BUT as MacOS does tend to work well on older machines they hold their value very well.

If you are still looking for an Apple machine then I would suggest an Intel processor based Mac Mini and you can continue to use your existing monitor etc. They do come up and you can get a perfectly useable one for £200-250.

We were prepared for around £500 on store finance, for a refurb not triple that.

It's a decent machine and the right price. You could attach your current monitor to it too in order to extend the desktop :)

still out of reach, which is why we went to all these PC Worlds today

Wheels, I can send it out via courier to you if you were interested, there is always a way. Message me me via the thread if you are interested. (Not sure if I am breaking rules mod, sorry if I am) I can even sort out pics for you tomorrow when I get home from inlaws.

No need ta Carl much appreciated thanks

Does it absolutely have to be a Mac? Sorry to break it to you, but you can't have bargain basement prices on a contemporary Apple Mac - it's either one or the other.

No Kris just sick of windows going belly up on the last 2 pc's in as many years, after much deliberation it's a no brainer, pc it is going to have to be.

This is why I dumped Windoze on my laptop and installed Ubuntu Linux instead. Never looked back (plus it works with my old scanner & printer and I can run quite a few Windoze applications on linux too!)

Jules. I totally agree with Darren on the Mac Mini with Intel processor. Bloody superb bits of kit and the two I have experienced have been nippy and uber reliable. I quite fancy one soon :D

I had one and swapped it for an iMac as someone wanted to use it attached to the TV. Unfortunately the new ones have seriously gone up in price which is making people think that they can get utterly STUPID prices for old ones! I have seen people asking £275 for a 1.4GHz G4 single processor version with a small HD and 512Mb RAM. Seriously I wouldn't buy a non intel Mac now unless it was cheap as chips and for a specific purpose. IE 1.4GHz G4 Silver Mac for £100 and stick Leopard server on it as a family server..... total cost £200 inc licence off ebay.

You've more chance of the second coming than getting a Mac for under £500 from PC World or any other high st retailer.

Agreed.

- There's not a lot of margin in Apple's RRP to allow dealers room to offer discounts.

- PC World hardly ever do end of line discounts on Apple gear anyhow IME. I've seen them selling models superseded months ago at full price like they're the bee's knees.

Try Jigsaw - they do seem to often have a number of 'previous model' Macs, etc. at reasonable-ish savings: http://www.jigsaw24.com/special-offers/computers-and-it?VE=Apple

Also one of the better mail order Mac retailers from my dealings with them over the years. They usually have at least half a clue about what they're selling.

Cowasaki, too true, but for those on a tight budget they're deffo still a good option for CS2 when they have enough RAM. Intels are a better buy all-round though....
